A class that had ranked among the best ever in Wisconsin high school basketball lore has been decimated to a large degree by the ever-expanding prep school market.

To be sure, many outstanding players in the state's 2027 class opted to remain at their respective high schools with the goal of competing for a WIAA state championship in March.

However, others made the difficult decision to leave their high school communities and teammates in order to play at a prep school.

Consider the following:

** Dooney Johnson and Corey Collins Corey Collins 6'7" | SF Milwaukee Juneau | 2028 State WI , the lone returning starters from Milwaukee Juneau's Division 4 state-title team, are attending East River High School in Orlando, Florida. Johnson, a 6-foot-6 guard and Gonzaga recruit, is ranked among the top 20-to-25 players in the country while Collins, a 6-foot-7 forward, turned in a strong showing in the spring/summer with the Team Herro 16U EYBL squad.

** Senior Jalen Brown Jalen Brown Jalen Brown 6'5" | CG Wauwatosa West | 2027 #89 Nation WI , a University of Wisconsin recruit, announced this week he will spend his senior year at Sequoia Prep in Arizona. Brown led Wauwatosa West to the 2025 Division 2 state championship and the 6-foot-5 guard was a key returning piece for a Trojans squad many expected to contend for another state title in 2026-27. His departure leaves a bit of a cloud over the Trojans' fortunes for the upcoming season.

** Promising senior wing Deuce McDuffie (6-7) announced in August he would be leaving Nicolet High School to attend Monarch Prep in Kansas City. McDuffie owns several NCAA Division I scholarship offers, including one from Wisconsin coach Greg Gard.

** Seniors Evan Ploeckelman Evan Ploeckelman Evan Ploeckelman 6'7" | SF Mukwonago | 2027 WI and Tref Rademaker Tref Rademaker Tref Rademaker 6'10" | PF DME Academy | 2027 WI will be teammates at DME Academy at St. John's Northwestern in Delafield. Rademaker played as a freshman and sophomore at West DePere befoer enrolling last fall at DME, which plays a national prep school schedule. Ploeckelman played at Mukwonago through his junior season before opting to attending DME for his senior year. Both players have multiple NCAA Division I scholarship offers.

** Several others once in the state's 2027 class, including Marion Boyland Marion Boyland Marion Boyland 6'6" | SF/PF Milwaukee Academy of Science | 2027 WI of Sheboygan Lutheran and Milwaukee Academy of Science, Alex Robbins Alex Robbins Alex Robbins 6'7" | SF Our Saviour Lutheran | 2027 WI of Iola-Scandinavia and Tim West of Madison Edgewood, among others, also are playing at out-of-state prep schools. Robbins might be the best prospect of those three and the 6-foot-8 wing recently reclassified from the 2027 class to 2028.

The players leaving the high school ranks in Wisconsin are no longer listed in the updated class of 2027 Prep Hoops Wisconsin Player Rankings released today. And their departures certainly takes some of the luster off a 2027 class that might have gone down as the best ever.

Still, quality players did decide to stay, including Duke recruit and Wisconsin Lutheran senior Kager Knueppel Kager Knueppel Kager Knueppel 6'10" | SF Wisconsin Lutheran | 2027 State #20 Nation WI , Iowa State recruit and Freedom senior Donovan Davis Donovan Davis Donovan Davis 6'8" | PF/SF Freedom | 2027 State #44 Nation WI , Iowa State recruit and Slinger senior Jack Kohnen Jack Kohnen Jack Kohnen 6'6" | SF Slinger | 2027 State #45 Nation WI , and Colorado State recruit and McFarland senior Eli Krueger Eli Krueger Eli Krueger 6'10" | PF McFarland | 2027 State #196 Nation WI .

Additional state players from the senior class who have committed to Division I programs include Zeak Jones Zeak Jones Zeak Jones 6'4" | SG Dominican | 2027 State WI of Dominican (Northern Illinois), Colin Julien Colin Julien Colin Julien 6'4" | SG Whitefish Bay | 2027 State WI of Whitefish Bay (St. Thomas), Michael Rogers Jr. Michael Rogers Jr. Michael Rogers Jr. 6'0" | PG Homestead | 2027 State WI of Homestead (Northern Illinois), Charlie Hoel Charlie Hoel Charlie Hoel 6'9" | PF Stanley-Boyd | 2027 State WI of Stanley-Boyd (North Dakota State), Will Stremlow Will Stremlow Will Stremlow 6'4" | SG Verona | 2027 State WI of Verona (Northern Illinois) and Austin Luchetti Austin Luchetti Austin Luchetti 6'7" | SF Monona Grove | 2027 State WI of Monona Grove (Northern Illinois).

Outside of the 10 state players who have given commitments to Division I schools, another six have committed to Division II programs, including Logan Ramczyk Logan Ramczyk Logan Ramczyk 6'2" | PG/SG Xavier | 2027 State WI of Xavier (Northern Michigan), Will Krueger Will Krueger Will Krueger 6'5" | SF De Pere | 2027 State WI of De Pere (Michigan Tech), Graysen Becker Graysen Becker Graysen Becker 6'2" | PG Altoona | 2027 State WI of Altoona (Angelo State), Reece Jordan Jr. Reece Jordan Jr. Reece Jordan Jr. 6'2" | SG Madison La Follette | 2027 State WI of Madison La Follette (Augustana, SD), Alex Chapman Alex Chapman Alex Chapman 6'5" | SG/SF Mount Horeb | 2027 State WI of Mount Horeb (Hillsdale) and Miles Schmidgall Miles Schmidgall Miles Schmidgall 6'8" | SF/PF Fall Creek | 2027 State WI of Fall Creek (Upper Iowa).
