We didn’t get to see a lot of Marrs last season but he’s back and healthy, ready to try and lead Ellensburg to their first state playoff appearance since 2016. Marrs is a unicorn of sorts with his combination of size, mobility, and ball skills. At 6’11, he’s a big threat around the rim and can surprise players with his quickness off the dribble too. Marrs is committed to playing basketball at Oregon State when his high school career is over.
First Team
North Kitsap was the top seed in the 2A State Tournament last season but heading into 2022-23 they lose three big contributors and Orness will now be the de-facto leader for the Vikings. He’s a unique breed at the point guard spot, bringing great athleticism, scoring, and playmaking to the court. Orness has the ability to be one of the top scorers in the state this season and should have the ball in his hands a lot as North Kitsap looks to repeat as Olympic League Champions.
Dalan broke the WF West single-season rebounding record in 2021-22 and it wouldn’t be all that surprising to see the big man do it again in 2022-23. He’s a pillar inside, getting deep position to work around the hoop. Dalan is not just a double-double threat, but as he showed last year, can go off for a 20-20 game more often than you’d think. WF West made it to the top 16 of last year’s state playoffs but Dalan has a chance to lead them past that mark and more this season.
If there was a version of “Sprawlball” for high school hoops there would surely be a chapter on Brown’s jumper. He led 2A Pullman to the State Championship game last season and though they fell short of winning it all, Brown and his team laid the foundation for a big run in 2022-23. He’s an elite shooter off the catch, off the bounce, and has great quickness in tight spaces to create room and get his shot off. He should score at a high level again but also shows phenomenal vision and fight that makes him a great leader for the Greyhounds.
The 6’6 wing is a superb talent and if he can lead Selah back to the 2A State Tournament he might get some consideration for 2A Player of the Year. Pepper has the size and skill to bring down a board and weave up the court through defenders all the way to the hoop. His pace looks easy, but he covers ground quickly and always looks to attack defenses before they get set. He can shoot the three with easy range and is Selah’s top playmaker.
Canales is a multi-faceted player who led his Lynden squad all the way to the 2A Title last season and claimed Player of the Tournament. He affects the game across all categories and is yet another guy up here who should compete for 2A Player of the Year. While Lynden loses their All-State player from a year ago in Jordan Medcalf, Canales is more than ready to fill those shoes and lead the Lions in their title defense.
Second Team
Brewer is one of the top guards in the 2A division, scoring at will and playing high-effort basketball. He led Tumwater to a fourth-place finish at last year’s State Tournament but with a solid core returning, surely has his eyes on the ultimate prize. He is a prolific shooter from distance and an underrated athlete when taking the ball to the rim. He led the Thunderbirds in scoring, assists, steals, and was third in rebounding last season. Brewer has what it takes to lead Tumwater on a deep run in the 2A playoffs.
It is almost too perfect that Santana plays for a team nicknamed the Bantams, because his game fits the definition to a tee. He’s not the biggest guard but he is lightning quick, unrelenting, and at times unstoppable. He causes equally daunting pressure on both ends of the court and can go on his own scoring runs, pushing pace and forcing defenses to react. Santana averaged about 20 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 2 steals per game last season and is a playmaker in every way for the Clarkston Bantams.
Holden is so solid, both offensively and defensively. He nearly led RA Long to the title game last season but fell by two points to the eventual champs, Lynden, in the quarter finals. He’s a defensive hound with great anticipation and leads the way offensively with clutch plays and timely shooting. He loses some major help from last year’s team with the departures of Jamond Harris and Aaron Oftsun, but the show must go on and Holden has the gusto to keep the ball rolling in Longview.
Kepley is the type of player who can fill multiple roles, shift around to different positions, all based on what the team needs. He can score the rock and has a nice mid-range game as well as finishing at the hoop. He can run point and facilitate to teammates and plays versatile defense. At 6’5, he brings a lot to the table with unselfish aggression and a strong feel for the game. The Mariners only lose one varsity player from last year and with Kepley at the helm, Sehome can make a push for a District Title and more.
Parlin has the build that makes you go, “Woah.” He’s a super lengthy combo guard (6’7″ wingspan) that makes plays in a variety of ways for the Monarchs. He averaged about 19 points per game last season and plays with an intensity that leads to a bunch of steals and transition buckets. They ran into a Prosser buzzsaw at last year’s state tournament, but Parlin leads a three-headed backcourt at Mark Morris, and is a player to watch who plays with a hunger for more.
