Morillo, a guard out of the Newman School in Massachusetts, wrapped up his high school career as the Class AAA Player of the Year. The 6’7″ guard played a major role in Newman winning both the Class AAA and National Prep championships. After recovering from an early season injury, he reminded everyone why he was such a highly regarded recruit, showing incredible poise with the ball in his hands, the ability to dictate tempo, and an impressive three-level scoring arsenal. His combination of feel for the game, positional size, and basketball IQ is rare and allowed him to impact games in a variety of ways, on both ends of the floor. He will continue his academic and athletic careers in the fall at Illinois.

Morillo was the National Prep Championship’s most dominant player. He was the best team’s best player all week, and it was pretty remarkable how consistently he produced on the offensive end. Against Putnam’s feisty backcourt, the 6-foot-7 point-forward was able to handle 94 feet of pressure and then use his size and ball handling ability to get to the front of the rim for finishes. He excelled in the post against smaller players all weekend as well, and he was incredible as a passer in every matchup Newman had. Whether the defense was switching, top locking, or over-helping, the Illinois commit had all the answers to the test. Special performance from Morillo this week.

Morillo was his usual dominant self in Sunday’s championship game. He was effective on the perimeter as a shooter from both the mid range and three, but he also excelled as an offensive rebounder and post-up threat. He’s so versatile on the offensive end; his size allows him to see over the defense for passing angles but his strength and handle allows him to get downhill and score for himself as well. Morillo won MVP for Newman and will be tough to stop at the National Prep Championships this week. He’s this team’s best player and a truly special prospect.

Morillo was Newman’s best player this weekend and looks to be fully recovered from an injury that kept him sidelined for the beginning of the season. The 6-foot-7 point-forward does an amazing job using his size and strength to bully the defense, but then he uses patience, head fakes and ball fakes to throw off the help side. Against New Hampton in the semis, he showed an ability to score from all three levels—his shot looks as good as it ever has, by the way—and then he spent the championship game against Cushing using his toughness and physicality to make a difference on the glass and on the defensive end. Morillo is such a versatile player and is going to walk into a nice role at Illinois next season.

Morillo has good size for his position and uses it to play with confidence and control. He plays at a smooth pace, never rushed, and consistently gets to his spots within the flow of the offense. His high IQ stands out with the way he reads defenders, anticipates rotations, and makes the right decision possession to possession. Morillo can score in multiple ways, whether it’s attacking the rim, pulling up in the mid-range, or knocking down shots from the perimeter. He’s comfortable creating off the dribble and can punish mismatches with his strength and balance. As a playmaker, he keeps teammates involved and delivers timely passes when the defense commits to him. Overall, he’s a versatile guard/wing who can run a team, generate efficient offense, and make winning plays.

This was my first time seeing Morillo play this season (he was injured to start the year), and he looks better than ever. The 6-foot-7 point-forward continues to dominate the game with his physicality and strength; he seems to constantly be getting stronger and more willing to burrow his way into the lane. He had some super impressive passes to cutters yesterday, too, and I was also wow’d by how his three-point shot looked, especially on the move and without much balance. If he can get his perimeter shot to be consistent, I genuinely think Morillo has what it takes to play on the TD Garden floor some day. Special feel and IQ.

Morillo missed some of the beginning of the season with an injury, but he’s starting to round into form and Sunday’s TD Garden matchup is an awesome opportunity to showcase that. The 6-foot-7 point-forward is probably Newman’s best passer and excels from the post and the nail as a result of his ability to see over the defense and make reads. He also loves using his strength and physicality to bully his way to the rim for finishes and floaters with both hands, as well as turnaround jumpers. Morillo is committed to Illinois next year and is exactly what NBA scouts are looking for out of a modern-day wing. He’s a special talent who could go a long way with basketball.

Morillo, a guard out of the Newman School, made some noise in his return to action during the game against Blair. The Illinois commit looked good in his first game back from injury, reminding onlookers why he’s one of the Top 50 prospects in the country. He’s a jumbo playmaker that can seemingly fill any role within an offense, and in this setting, did a great job of getting to his spots as a scorer where he could finish over smaller defenders. Defensively, he can guard up or down a position, uses his strength in the paint against forwards, and has the ability to make an impact on the defensive glass.
