Expert Analysis
Clayton Conover | Prep Hoops Scout
The lead guard got to a high volume of attempts in the paint, either through floaters or elevated layups at the rim. Nabbing a 19 point performance primarily from attempts around the rim, he is among the best downhill scorers in the state, putting up a great performance in the final game of his high school career. Defensively, they remained a brick wall at the point of attack, quicker than any of his opponents laterally. He brings excellent reactions, getting into position early to grab steals and kickstart fast breaks.

Carter’s impact goes beyond the stat sheet, possessing a very high feel for the game and incredibly unique style of play. Receiving multiple RMAC offers over his high school career, there is no doubt that Carter has made himself one of the premier guards in the state. Areas of upside that allow him to mold into the next level are his acute awareness on the defensive end, complemented by notable athleticism. Chaparral currently sits at 6th in the state, in no small part thanks to Carter’s impact.

22.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 3.6 APG, 2.3 SPG, 57% 2P, 71% FT
One of the most unique play styles in the state, Carter has been slithering into the lane all season for acrobatic finishes and well timed floaters. Clearly possessing a soft touch on tough shots, the lead guard has been nothing short of dominant, leading 8-3 Chaparral with a group hosting only one other double digit per game scorer. His point of attack defense cannot be overlooked either, a large part of his recruiting, the guard is suffocating on-ball.

Carter is the head of a one-two punch and is averaging 21.4 points per game. He is a force inside the arc and is being able to get to the rim and consistently finish through contact. When he gets to the free throw line he is shooting 71% and will look to connect at a high clip. He is quick to get out on breaks and can finish in transition. Will be a guard that you will need to keep on the radar.

Carter is a shifty guard that can score on all three levels and is a threat when he is creating off of the dribble. He is a knock down shooter from three and will make the defense pay for leaving him open. He is a great on-ball defender and has a knack for poking the ball loose and getting it out in transition. He has an explosive first step which helps him get to the basket and is able to finish with some finesse moves. Is a player that is able to use his vision and drop dimes when teammates are cutting or can drive and kick. Will be one of the top combo guards to keep an eye on this summer.

Gavin Carter is a player expected to have a breakout year due to his big minutes last year as a young player on a squad that graduated their top players from last season. Gavin has a quick first step and uses his long arms to finish around or over the top of defenders near the basket.
