Continue ReadingThere are few, if any guards in recent memory who have filled up the stat sheet quite like Austin. For perspective, the guard has put up 20 or more points in all but three of his games this season. Although scoring is just one of Austin’s myriad of skills, it is arguably the most eye opening. Recently garnering an offer from CSU Pueblo, the guard has quite a few opportunities at hand going into this year’s playoffs.
Carter’s impact goes beyond the stat sheet, possessing a very high feel for the game and incredibly unique style of play. Receiving multiple RMAC offers over his high school career, there is no doubt that Carter has made himself one of the premier guards in the state. Areas of upside that allow him to mold into the next level are his acute awareness on the defensive end, complemented by notable athleticism. Chaparral currently sits at 6th in the state, in no small part thanks to Carter’s impact.
Howery’s blend of supreme IQ with the ball and growth as shotmaker puts him as one of the premier lead guards in this class. Someone worth running your offense, he showed consistency throughout this season thanks to his health. Although always an excellent playmaker, the guard’s perimeter shooting from a standstill or off the bounce makes him such a dynamic lead guard. Defensively, his quick reactions and proactive instincts allow him to compete about as well as anybody at his size.
Kim has provided stability as a downhill scorer, bringing multiple avenues to score in the paint once with a head of steam. His soft touch with either hand has added efficiency to his shotmaking in the paint, proving effective versus contests. As the #2 option with top-5 Valor Christian, Kim not only brings dependable playmaking but a winning impact.
Widic is quite possibly the strongest guard on this list, bringing a formidable frame and enjoys backing down backcourt opponents when presented with the right matchup. His ability to bully opponents into the paint is not just for scoring, but just as much kickout passes for perimeter shooters.
Ellwood has been a fantastic option on both ends for a premier program in Rock Canyon. Highly active on help side defense, the guard is constantly flying all over on help side or rotations. He is especially willing to attack the rim, drawing contact against taller opponents. Ball control is another area worth nothing, where his comfort dribbling versus pressure is incredibly valuable to his passing vision.
Highlights
Recently returning on January 23rd, Corner’s production has begun to return to the mean, up to 23 and 19 in his past two games. A potent shotmaker when rolling, he can knock down shot attempts from all three levels. There are few holes in the guard’s offensive game, an especially smooth scoring threat.
Weir has found success attacking the rim, utilizing a quick dribble move to free up space for the attack. Effective getting to hop steps through contests, Weir is a dependable scorer, particularly through this season.
