Expert Analysis
Bobby Lopez | Prep Hoops Scout
Spears continues to show just how much his game is growing, and he’s becoming a player that impacts winning in every way possible. His facilitating has always been a strong suit and now he’s impacting the game in every facet. He’s playing with confidence, especially with the ball in his hands and is doing a great job creating space and getting to his spots in the midrange. He’s finishing stronger around the basket while still knocking down the three at a high level. On the defensive end he competes hard, stays in front of his man, and makes things difficult all game long. The confidence, toughness and all around production are standing out more each weekend, and Spears is quickly becoming a major stock riser this summer

Spears continues to take strides as a lead guard, and it showed on Day 1. He plays under control, doesn’t get sped up, and values possessions. He also handles pressure well, and that breaks down the defense as he gets into the teeth of the defense and makes the right play. He moves well with and without the ball and can create off the bounce. He’s also a legit shooter who can knock down threes off the dribble and punishes you if he’s left open. He got a few to fall from deep, which led to run outs, and the defense started to overplay, which led to FT’s or easy baskets for others. He’s efficient, steady, and impactful. Big showing for Champ against top guard competition, and I like the rhythm that he plays with.

is a guy I’ve been heavy on since he first entered the high school scene, becoming a pivotal piece of the puzzle for a thriving Chaparral squad that went all the way to the final four in this year’s playoffs. Playing alongside bucket-getters such as

, Spears doesn’t have a shortage of options he can dish the rock to. Spears plays with an immense amount of poise that allows him to make the right decisions on the fly, and has earned him 12 PPG, 3.7 RPG, and 3.4 APG on the season. A proven knockdown sniper from distance, defenders will pay a huge price for leaving Spears open beyond the arc. Featuring a smooth touch around the rim and a high volume of scoring, Spears has established himself as one of the top premier guards the box state has to offer as only a rising junior.

is without a doubt one of the most efficient guards in the box state, and he proved it under the brightest lights. In his second-season playoff debut, Spears maintained a strong level of poise and composure with the rock in his hands. Contributing an essential 15 points on 86% from the field and 75% from long range, Spears never hesitates to let it fly. In addition to high-volume scoring, Spears also added 6 assists, 2 steals, and a block to his totals, which speaks volumes to his all-around game and exponential progression.

is coming off an electric 24-point outing against Heritage on February 6th, which represents the outstanding playmaking abilities he’s put on display all season long. Changing pace while dribbling and protecting the ball at all costs, Spears continues to prove why he’s more than capable of orchestrating any offense he’s a part of. Acquiring 3.2 APG, 3.8 RPG, and 1.4 SPG on top of his scoring, Spears exudes confidence in all areas of the game.

Spears is settling into the role of a true point guard, and it’s starting to open things up for everyone around him. He’s setting the table, feeding scorers in rhythm, and giving his team the structure and balance that they needed last season. At the same time, he’s learning when to go get his own as a scorer, especially in the pick-and-roll as a playmaker, but also as a knockdown shooter. This is a big sophomore year coming as he continues to find that balance and rise into one of the conference’s top guard prospects. He’s already on radars, but I am expecting people to be even higher on him moving forward.

has always been one of 2028’s top scorers, torching defenses off the dribble and making them pay for giving him space. The element of his game that isn’t talked about enough is his defense. Spears slides his feet and contests every shot, exuding confidence on both ends of the ball. Thinking ahead of the play, Spears is always in between passing lanes, ready to accelerate in transition.

Champ appeared to be in a different role for Chaparral as we got to see what they look like at full strength, and we like what we saw. He took on the point guard responsibilities and handled it as the facilitator role rather than being one of the top scoring options. He settled in as was able to manage pace, kept the ball moving, and organized the offense. Champ didn’t force but still looked to score when the opportunities were there, and that has to be his role with two of the state’s top scorers around him. He created for teammates off the dribble and had defensive moments that led to transition chances. This seemed to be a move where he was adjusting to being the lead facilitator, and he looked comfortable doing it.

Spears entered Colorado Live as one of the top 2028 prospects in the state and backed it up with a standout weekend. He put together dynamic scoring stretches, showcasing his ability to create off the dribble and score at all three levels. Whether hitting threes, floaters, or mid-range pull-ups, he was locked in. He moves well without the ball, reads the game maturely, and plays beyond his years. Spears is a high-upside guard with star potential, and in the game of the weekend against Rangeview, he was the difference-maker in the game as he was all weekend.
