The top point guard in the state, Foster had a strong case to be the number one overall prospect in Ohio’s 2027 class when we debuted these rankings. One of the top scoring freshman in Ohio, Foster did it against top competition with Lima Sr. An elite shooter off the catch and bounce, Foster is a threat to score from 25 feet already. While his shot-making is the trait that jumps off the page in the scouting report, Foster also has an great feel for the freshman guard. There were even times during his freshman season where I wish he was more aggressive in trying to take over as a scorer, but instead made the right play for his teammates. Already with multiple Division I offers from Cincinnati, Toledo and Duquesne, Foster has been noticed by top regional college programs.
Youngstown Ursuline had a great run to the state semis and Gunther was the engine behind that run. A small point guard, Gunther is incredibly skilled. With high level ball handling, processing and feel, Gunther just makes stuff happen on the offensive end. Showing flashes of being an elite shot-maker from the outside as well, Gunther has the ability to also run off screens and knock down shots off movement when he’s off the ball. Limited from a physical perspective right now, Gunther will hope to grow a couple inches and also bulk up. He’s got plenty of time to develop his body so that’s not a real concern at the moment. Defensively is where his small frame gave him trouble against more physically mature and older guards at the high school level. I did think Gunther competed on the defensive end and was best used chasing shooters off the 3-point line on that end of the floor.
Highlights
Probably the 2027 prospect I’ve seen the most in Ohio, Mirgon was a guard who got on my radar last spring playing up 15 U Midwest 3SSB. Continuing to play up with the 16 U group this spring and summer, Mirgon impacts winning in a variety of ways. A high IQ guard who makes the extra pass and doesn’t turn the ball over, Mirgon’s decision making is a big plus. While Mirgon is best used as a playmaker for others from the point guard position, he’s also a knockdown shooter off the catch. Impacting the game on both ends of the court, Mirgon gets his fair share of steals and blocks. Continuing to develop as an athlete with quickness and physicality, Mirgon playing against older competition should help him as he matures. One of the top point guards in Ohio’s 2027 class, Mirgon is a name you’ll continue to hear a lot about over the next few years.
One of the top athletes in Ohio’s 2027 class, Johnson has excellent burst and stop/start ability on the ball. Able to attack off the bounce and create for others, Johnson draws a lot of attention due to his slashing ability and gravity on the ball. The biggest question mark that Johnson has to answer is a perimeter shot. His form doesn’t look bad at the moment, he’s just very hesitant to let it fly and hasn’t consistently made shots from the outside. An ability that will take time to develop and master, it’s something Johnson needs to be working on in the off-seasons to come back as a Sophomore and help Walnut Ridge contend for a city league title.
Lutheran East won another state title and while their decorated senior class graduates, a talented 2027 class that’s headlined by Hill is ready to take over. A true two-way point guard, Hill’s best trait is his on-ball defense. Playing a role as a third guard for the Falcons as a freshman, Hill had to pick his spots as a slasher and occasionally knocked down shots off the catch. With the graduation of his two back-court teammates, I expect Hill to slide into the primary creator role next season and flourish. Look for Hill to be known as a household name across NEO next season.
I caught Torbert in his first career high school game with Cincinnati Taft, he scored 11 points which was one of six double-digit scoring games he had as a freshman. A quick guard who did a nice job setting his teammates up with the pass, Torbert averaged 4.0 assists per game as a freshman. I also liked the toughness that Torbert showed as a defender, pressuring ball handlers and making them work to get around him. With Taft projected to have a strong 2028 class coming in, they could find themselves back at the top of the CMAC.
Notable watchlist players
One of my favorite freshmen in the state to watch, I love the way James impacts the game on both ends of the court. Few freshman understand their role and make an effort defensively like James did in a playoff win for the Titans. Playing a small role on varsity as a freshman, I expect James to gradually increase his minutes and touches on the ball over the next two seasons. Toledo St John’s has a lot of young talent and James is a name to know in the Toledo area.
Highlights
Another Toledo area guard, this time from the TAAC. Stokes had a big season and was a key reason why Maumee Valley Country Day was unbeaten until mid January. Stokes is an undersized guard who can really shoot it off the catch and plays tough defense for his size. One of the most ready to play right away freshman guards in NW Ohio, Stokes made a big impression in the time he played as a freshman.
Young had a big freshman year for Maple Heights, getting thrown into the fire right away and leading the Mustangs. A quick guard who is skilled off the bounce and can really score it. Also when defenders went under screens on Young, trying to stop his dribble drive game, he showed the ability to knock down 3-pointers off the bounce. A big-time competitor, Young is a prospect that you’ll hear a lot more of as the years continue in northeast Ohio.
Another guard who played up 15 U last summer, Perkins is a name Westerville North fans have grown familiar with at the guard position. Tyson has a very high IQ for a player his age and really gets after it defensively. Hope to see Tyson develop physically and grow a few inches in the next year or so, he’s got the ball handling, passing and defensive ability to be a very impactful high school player and college prospect. A name to know in central Ohio’s 2027 class.
