I’ve seen Simpson a lot over the past 12 months and he’s improved in multiple areas of the game but I was waiting for him to dominate a contest with other studs on the court. Simpson did just that on Friday afternoon as the rising senior was the most productive player in a contest that featured numerous Division I talents on the floor. Simpson is able to play on or off the ball and his ability to make shots off the catch was a key factor in the Spartans blowout win over Ferndale. Simpson made plays as a secondary facilitator as he had a couple cuts that led to kickout passes to shooters, attacked closeouts and used both the step through and the scoop finish to score at the rim. I had a couple low major Division I coaches reach out to me about Simpson from this weekend and based on how he played against Ferndale, I could see him getting offers at that level before the summer ends.
In the best Ohio Vs Ohio game of the weekend, Lima Sr picked up another signature victory as they continue to stamp their case as one of the best teams in Ohio regardless of division. Simpson did a nice job getting to his spots early with a couple pull-up jumpers. Add in a time and space 3-pointer and a late putback layup and Simpson managed to finish with a team-high 17 points. A junior who continues to improve, Simpson and the Spartans are the team to beat in Division II right now.
Simpson made some key plays in the comeback effort by the Spartans, knocking down some clutch corner 3-pointers and even taking a charge to help swing momentum. Simpson has made his calling card being a swiss army knife from the guard position, able to attack switches off the dribble, make shots off the catch and provide tough on-ball defense. He did all of those things and more in the win between two of northwest Ohio’s best.
Simpson is the type of point guard every team needs. He’s a smart player who runs the show with confidence and composure, never shying away from big moments. He’s a pass-first guard and a true floor general, but he can score it when the opportunities present themselves. What I like most is how steady he is — he keeps everyone involved and makes the right play, and that’s why he’s the kind of leader you want on the court in this event.
Simpson had an excellent summer with Phenom United 16 U, one of the top teams on the 3SSB circuit. A lead guard who makes shots and defends is a valuable asset to have on your team and Simpson checks both of those boxes. With some big scoring games on the 3SSB circuit, Simpson proved he can produce Vs some of the top talent in his class. Excited to see how Simpson performs on a Lima Sr squad that has a lot of guard talent and will need to play tough and scrappy to make up for their lack of size. Simpson’s strength and frame could be especially valuable because he can force turnovers and rebound.
A player who has continued to boost his stock this summer, Simpson is due for a big rankings boost during our next update thanks to performances like the one he had on Wednesday with 13 points and 3 assists. Simpson was confident with the ball in his hands with a sweet right to left crossover into a layup standing out as well as a play where Simpson hit the roll man in the pick and roll just to get the ball kicked out to him in the opposite corner for a spot-up 3-pointer. That two man action with DeMaceo Bronston was successful all game and will be a pair I look to keep seeing have success as action rolls on this week in Rock Hill.
Simpson is a plug and play guard who does a great job stuffing the stat sheet and doing whatever is needed to help win basketball games. He was contacted by Miami (OH) & Liberty. Simpson is on pace to see a bigger role on an always competitive Lima Senior squad. I think he is a prospect who low major coaches should make a priority in the 2027 class.
Simpson impressed the with consistency he shows that he can impact the game in many different facets. He gets paint touches at will and can barrel his way to different spots on the floor. He thinks the game at a high level and can set others up for scoring chances of their own often. Simpson showed flashes from behind the arc. He is a safe pair of hands whenever he is on the floor. He is in the right spots on the floor to collect rebounds.
Playing next to a bunch of talented players, Simpson doesn’t have to force the issue for Phenom United 16 U who have a very talented and deep roster. Once Simpson settled down he had a strong two-way impact with a couple of steals, shots off the catch and finishes off drives. If Simpson can continue to produce for this team as a utility guard, he’ll rise up our rankings and get some early college interest as a 2027 prospect.
Lima Sr is one of the most talented teams in the state and Simpson is a player who could play a leading scorer role on a lot of other teams. With the Spartans, Simpson plays tough defense, pushes the pace and sets the table. With his toughness, athleticism and activity, Simpson is a nice fit for the up-tempo style the Spartans like to play with. I’ll be curious to continue to see how Simpson develops as an offensive player because he already impacts the game without needing to score the ball which is impressive for a young player at the varsity level.
