Otey, a junior guard out of St. Thomas More in Connecticut, has made a splash in his return to the region, reminding everyone of his ability to take over games on the offensive end of the floor. St. Thomas More is the last team in the four way tie for 3rd and relies on significant youth throughout their roster, including Otey, who is one of the nation’s top prospects. Otey is a smooth operator on the offensive end of the floor, showcasing the ability to get a basket almost at will. He gets it done in transition, in the half-court, and late in the shot clock as a scorer, but also shows the ability to break down defenders off the bounce and create for others. His ability to rebound on one end and initiate offense in transition allows him to elevate the play of his teammates offensively. Otey has put together an impressive list of offers and should continue to gain interest on the travel circuit this spring and summer.

Otey is an exciting addition to the NEPSAC and has a college-ready game right now. The 6-foot-5 combo-guard is always ready to attack the paint on the catch, so he’s pretty difficult to defend on closeouts and as an off-ball mover. Once he drives, he gets to the hoop very quickly and uses his athleticism and length to finish against bigger players. He can also make shots from the outside and does the little things when it comes to defending individually and in a team concept, attacking the offensive boards and making multiple efforts for loose balls. D1 schools should be all over Otey and he’ll be one of the better NEPSAC players this season.

Otey’s all around game was seen all throughout the weekend at NPS. On Friday Otey showed that he can live in the paint with frequent touches on the interior converting a handful of grunge buckets. His perimeter shot-making was highlighted on Saturday conversing three shots from deep. He was a frequent flyer at the charity stripe and made a living there. One thing about his game that really caught my attention was his passing he connected often with his teammates with some quality finds which lead scoring chances. I feel like when he was an underclassman he was more of a score first guy, by him becoming a facilitator it only makes him more appealing to college programs.

Otey is a 6’5 guard out of St. Thomas More School. The 2027 prospect is a big guard that can operate with or without the basketball in his hands and has proven to be an elite, multi-level scorer. A Top 50 prospect in his class, he does a nice job of making decisions out of ball screens, can score over defenders in the mid-range, and is a high level shooter both off the catch and off the bounce. He has the ability to make plays in the half-court and in transtion and does a really good job of moving without the basketball. His return to New England was a headline story this summer.

is a powerhouse of an offensive force. He was scoring from all three levels with the ball in his hands while also dishing to his teammates on the move decisively. He also contributed defensively with quick hands for steals.

I really enjoy watching the pace at which Otey plays the game. For a 6-foot-5 sophomore, he has an amazing feel and is never in any sort of rush offensively. He uses slow steps very well and also gets into the body of the defender to offset their balance and strength. He won’t necessarily wow you with athleticism – which could potentially limit his high-major recruitment – so some improvements in that area would help him out a lot. However, I think he’s skilled enough and strong enough to hold his own at that level – he already has a Villanova offer.
