Expert Analysis
Mark Miller | Prep Hoops Scout
Ruz played at DME Academy in Delafield as a sophomore but has since transferred to Pius XI Catholic. He will have to play JV1 ball this winter due to WIAA transfer rules, but the Popes could have a difference maker 12 months from now. Ruz is one of the top backcourt players in Wisconsin’s 2027 class as he is outstanding with the ball in his hands. He can zip around defenders with his speed, get into the lane and toss pinpoint passes to his teammates, and knock down three-point shots. He has very good size, an excellent feel for the game and competes with an edge that only helps his teams post victories.

Pius XI’s new point guard has some of the best handles and vision in the state. During the 5v5 game defenders had difficulties keeping in front of Massimo, as he has an endless bag of moves in his arsenal to break his man down and get into the lane. Crafty finisher who can score from a number of difficult angles. When in the open floor Massimo seems to have eyes in the back of his head, able to locate teammates running the floor with a no-look dime.

A crafty ball handler with smooth handles. Goes off the bounce quickly to convert on primary break opportunities off the outlet or off of a rebound. Sees the floor well in different phases of the offense. Can split defenders with his natural quickness and will read the defense accordingly. Gets to the rim quite often and was able to convert on dribble drives.

After hearing some good things about him from earlier events this spring, this was my first time seeing Massimo play. I came away impressed with his passing and finishing ability. At 6’1 he has a quick burst to get downhill, and some explosive athleticism to hang in the air to make otherwise difficult finishes look routine. That explosiveness also translated to a transition dunk in the first half. He seems to have eyes in the back of his head at times as he delivered some flashy assists as well to set up his teammates. There were a few times he got caught trying to do too much and ended up turning it over, but it was a strong overall performance helping lead 24:Up to a win in their opener.
