The unsung hero for Phelps was Johnson, a swingman who’s worked his way up the rotation from the second team two years ago into the starting lineup as a senior. His natural inclination is to get buckets, and he certainly boasts a skillset to warrant that approach with his inside-out abilities that pose a consistent mismatch for opposing forwards. Where Johnson impressed most was with the added toughness and maturity to his approach, as he made several key plays around the rim on both ends that we wouldn’t have seen him make in years past. This is a clear scholarship-level wing forward by this point, with the chance to creep to the D1 level in time if the consistency can match the talent level.

There’s a lot of complexities to basketball, but at the end of the day it comes down to scoring more points than the other team, placing a perpetual value on the pure bucket-getting that Johnson provides. A true three-level scoring threat, he’s a consistent matchup problem with his ability to finish over smaller defenders inside or drag bigger forwards away from the basket to attack off the bounce. He’s grown into a reliable shooter off the catch from 3. We’d like to see him find more ways to apply his size and athleticism over the course of the game, but scholarship-level schools looking for scoring on the wing can certainly throw a look Johnson’s way.

Johnson is an athletic and fast wing prospect with extraordinary versatility. He can run out in transition as a lane filler or ball handler. In both scenarios he can finish with authority or a creative touch. On half-court possessions, Johnson (8.3 ppg.) will drain threes, slash back door for lay-ins and use the dribble to get to the rim. Earlier this season Johnson netted 22 points (4 threes) against Friends Central. He also posted 16 points (2 threes) against Westtown School. Johnson holds an offer from Atlantis University (USCAA), but more college coaches need to stop sleeping on this prospect.

Johnson opened the 2024-25 season with a solid 16-point effort against Westtown School. He followed that up with an outstanding 22-point performance in Phelps School’s win over Friends Central. Johnson hit four triples in that game. He also produced point in transition, via the offensive glass and on dives to the cup. Johnson is a long and bouncy two-way prospect who is extremely versatile. Last week he picked up an offer from Atlantis University (USCAA), but more college coaches should text this athletic scoring wing immediately.

On a Phelps roster loaded with DI talent, Johnson is a prospect flying under the radar. Hopefully after a strong July circuit and now several impressive fall ball runs, that status is about to change. Johnson’s length, athleticism, and speed jump out right away. But college coaches who watch him for an extended period will love his well-rounded skill set as well. He can score off straight line dribble drives, back door cuts to the hoop and on quick post ups. In the last six months, Johnson’s 3-point shot has become a legitimate weapon too. His ability to play in pick-n-roll action is a developing asset. In close, he can flush on an opponent’s head or score with a soft touch using either hand. At the other end of the court, Johnson gobbles up defensive rebounds.
