Expert Analysis
Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
A veteran of the East Coast Cyclones program, Thomas is coming off a steady post-grad year at Phelps as a key glue guy in between an explosive senior backcourt and an abundance of alluring young talent. He has interest from a handful of high-academic programs on either side of the D1 bubble, each of whom is attracted to his Swiss-army two-way play on the wing. Thomas is a high-level defensive presence who can match up across a handful of perimeter positions while providing impactful helpside rim protection with his length, instincts, and explosive leaping. He’s not always the most aggressive offensively but is an efficient complementary piece who can knock down open shots from the perimeter or make an impact at the rim as a cutter and in transition. He’ll be looking to win over the right D1 program with his plug-and-play ability.

An effective scorer who can put the ball in the bucket in a plethora of ways. Possesses good positional size and the versatility to slide into multiple spots on the floor. Thrives at getting to his spots and using his jumper, while also taking advantage of attacking closeouts. Defensively, he is a switchable piece who can guard multiple positions. The biggest knock on him is consistency, but he has the tools to be a phenomenal pickup at the junior college or division II level.

Offering timely, efficient support on the wing, Thomas worked his way to 16 points as a key piece toward the win. Thomas thrived on the margins, working mostly without the ball in his hands to get into position for easy buckets off cuts and rebounds. He was effective finishing in traffic and also showed his ability to step out and knock down an open shot from the perimeter. The post-grad swingman via Paul VI (NJ) also brought his trademark defense, highlighted by a series of athletic blocks at the rim. He’s a no-brainer scholarship-level option with plug-and-play ability on the wing.

After several years as a starter and key contributor for one of South Jersey’s top programs in Paul VI, Thomas is spending a post-grad year at Phelps with a number of programs on either side of the D1 bubble closely monitoring his development. A long and lanky swingman, he shines with a plug-and-play complementary skillset as a reliable floor-spacer out to the arc and active defensive playmaker with especially intriguing shot-blocking instincts from the wing. He’s shown flashes creating his own shot off the bounce as well and is an athletic finisher in space as a cutter or in transition. If he’s consistent with his aggression on both ends of the floor, it wouldn’t be a surprise for a D1 program to pull the trigger on Thomas with his ability to thrive in a translatable role.

An intricate piece for this 17U East Coast Cyclones group, Isaiah Thomas continued his strong play from the spring into the summer— getting to the basket off the bounce and knocking down open shots from the perimeter. Thomas has also continued to show more and more flashes of his versatility as a scorer, demonstrating his growth as a multi level scorer thus far this summer.
Thomas picked up an offer from Manhattan at the end of June’s scholastic live period and could see a few more LM schools get involved in his recruitment.

A smooth 3+D-style wing guard, Thomas showed a poised off-ball game while packing most of his production into a key stretch of the game. With the clock ticking down toward halftime, he came out of a ghost screen action to knock down a tough 3 off the catch. Just seconds later, he showed his open-floor athleticism on a lefty transition and-one that gave PVI all the momentum heading into half up double digits. Expected to take a post-grad year and enter the 2026 class, we’d like to see Thomas turn a corner from an aggressiveness standpoint so he can really take off with the extra year. Nonetheless, his length, unselfish approach, and plug-and-play skillset will have him as a popular name amongst high-academic programs at the scholarship level.
