A 2028 prospect playing up at the 17 U level with PSA Cardinals on the EYBL circuit, I caught Valera Melo in April at EYBL Session I down in Atlanta. A wing prospect who thrives in transition, the faster the tempo the better for Valera Melo. I first caught Valera Melo for New Heights at the 15 U level where his athleticism and length stood out among prospects from his grade. Making the move to Phelps School last year, Valera Melo was able to play with the ball in his hands and shine offensively with some big scoring games this winter. Expect regional mid to high major programs to get involved with Valera Melo’s recruitment this summer.

The flashes were there throughout the winter as Valera Melo headlined a deep and talented young core at Phelps that fit in smoothly as complementary pieces to a dynamic senior backcourt. His upside was already apparent but the Dominican wing’s Donofrio debut, despite coming in a loss, gave him the chance to show how much he’s already capable of when empowered with a greater offensive load. Instead of spacing out to the wing, he was placed into more of a ballhandling role, showing his ability to create his own shot from the perimeter in a way that’s really intriguing for a young prospect with his size. His ability to produce across a variety of roles gives him a nice intersection of floor and ceiling when considering his long-term projection as a prospect.

Getting a chance to function as a go-to guy after playing more of a condensed role for Phelps in the winter, Valera Melo took advantage of the opportunity despite the loss, getting loose for 23 points in a display of his clear long-term upside. The smooth wing guard showed his silky jumper both off the catch and creating his own space off the dribble, knocking down five 3s with as feathery a release as you’ll find in the region. He also showed his ability to get to his spots off the dribble and finish with dexterity and evolving athleticism. It looks like only a matter of time before the Dominican product begins percolating onto high-major radars.

Continuing to come on strong down the stretch of his sophomore year, Valera Melo contributed 12 points in an efficient outing hampered only by foul trouble. A smooth complementary wing, he thrived on the margins as a floor-spacer, connective passer, and versatile defender. He showed his high-level shooting ability on a pair of 3s, showcasing an effortlessly smooth high release with strong instincts for relocating to open space. While the shooting is his calling card, Valera Melo also shows intriguing feel as a playmaker, making quick decisions on the catch to keep the defense scrambling. Defensively, he shows a consistent commitment to keep the ball in front and was also effective using his size and length to crash down on the glass. Valera Melo offers an enticing blend of floor and ceiling from a prospect standpoint and should continue to bubble onto high-major radars over the spring and summer.

Leading a talented young core at Phelps, Valera Melo has come on strong throughout the year and continued with a smooth 13-point outing. The Dominican wing made his biggest impact as a floor-spacer from beyond the arc, spotting up and knocking down a trio of 3s while showcasing his fluid stroke and textbook high release. He also showed promising flashes of his ability to put the ball on the deck and attack in space. Defensively, he took pride in his matchup with Johnson while using his size and length to make an impact across multiple positions. It wasn’t a dominant performance by any means but offered a glimpse at the type of translatable role Valera Melo can play at a pretty high level down the line.

Making the move from Nazareth (NY) where he saw limited varsity exposure, Valera Melo has been a bit up and down under the gauntlet of Phelps’ national schedule but the high notes have been loud enough to clearly warrant his status as a top 10 prospect in the state. The Dominican-born swingman stands out immediately with his size and length on the perimeter while moving with an alluring blend of grace and explosiveness. He’s most effective as a shotmaker from the perimeter with a beautiful high release that he can get to in innumerable ways off the catch or dribble. He shows promising instincts as a defensive playmaker and rebounder, and there appears to be upside in his ability as a scorer and playmaker off the dribble. He’ll have a chance to rise from his current ranking with added consistency moving forward, but is already on track to be on high-major radars before long.

Valera-Melo, a wing out of the Phelps School, was one of the most impressive 2028’s in attendance. He knocked down multiple threes in the game we saw, while also showing some breakdown ability off the bounce. He has terrific positional size, long arms, and plus athleticism that he uses to his advantage as a rim finisher and off-ball defender. His effort level on the defensive glass was noticable and he also shows a good feel for the game as a grab-and-go rebounder in transition.

A new prospect in the area after moving down from Nazareth (NY), Valera Melo has been garnering buzz among college coaches and scouts throughout the open gym season this fall and made it obvious as to why with his play on Saturday. A jumbo guard with a frame to slide all across the positional spectrum along the perimeter, the Dominican-born wing guard saw a large portion of time initiating offense as a ballhandler, showcasing smooth ball skills and a natural feel as a playmaker. He has an effortless flick-of-the-wrist stroke from a high pocket whether shooting off the catch or the dribble, possessing deep range and justifiable confidence to let it fly quickly when in rhythm. While his foot speed pushes him more toward the wing on the defensive end, Valera Melo fits the type of positionless modern basketball offensively with his size and skillset that’s being increasingly coveted at the highest levels.

Enmanuel is a smooth shooting swingman who got to it early and often and if he is not guarded on the perimeter he will make you pay. His size is imposing on the perimeter which makes it a challenge for smaller guys to guard him. His ability to play above the rim was seen throughout the camp. He showed he can play around the rim. He is effective putting the ball on the deck and getting to different spots. Valera-Melo is always looking to hunt for his own shot off the ball. He made an effort to rebound out of his area on defense.
