Sweeney is a talented scoring guard who reminds me of recent Moore graduate Day Day Harrison. A scorer who excels in isolation but is also capable of getting past defenders and creating for teammates, CJ is one of the potential breakout candidates in Louisville next season. He’s primed for a big summer with Moore and has already been enjoying a strong AAU campaign.

One of the top guards in the Louisville area, Sweeney was efficient for Wildcat Select 15 U as he was able to get to the rim in both half-court and transition opportunities. A hard left hand driver, Sweeney does a good job of leveraging his body to score past rim protectors but will eventually need to develop a right-hand counter in the next few years. Extremely tough to stop at the 15 U level due to his quick first step and touch around the rim, Sweeney was one of the most productive freshman guards in Kentucky during the winter and should continue to put up monster numbers in the KHSAA.

CJ stands as the lone underclassmen voted 1st Team All-6th Region per the Courier Journal – a feat that speaks for itself. To put it plainly, the kid can put the ball in the bucket. His scoring helped lead Moore to its second straight 23rd District championship before falling short in the 6th Region quarterfinal matchup. Despite the loss, CJ showcased a little of what KY basketball can expect from him for the next three years. Several reports indicate that he played with the flu in the contest, but the freshman guard still finished with 22 PTS and 4 REB.

CJ is a volume scorer who excels at attacking the rim and finishing. Sweeney is a capable three point shooter as well but tends to do a lot of damage off the bounce. It’s a little surprising that CJ doesn’t live at the free throw line considering how well he gets into the paint. Long term, Sweeney has the potential to be the best point guard in this class and this class is LOADED with point guards.

CJ is another really good guard in a class full of really good guards. Wired to score at a high rate, Sweeney is going to be expected to do A LOT for Manual this year and he is likely more than capable. CJ is a player who I’ve not been able to see live more than once so far but his film is impressive. Top ten is a good starting point for him and we could see Sweeney move up these rankings in the future after our staff gets more opportunities to see him play.
