One of the more explosive vertical athletes in the Midwest from the class of 2027, Curry has a crazy impressive highlight tape from his freshman season. It took Curry a while to get going as a freshman, only scoring in double-figures once in his first 10 games. However, Curry hit a stride near the end of the season and finished in double-figures in seven of his last 10 games. I liked the defensive impact Curry made for a freshman, averaging 1.9 steals and 1.0 blocks per game. That defensive impact helped his offensive game as Curry is best in transition with a head of steam. Curry also gained confidence from 3-point range as the year progressed, making 35% of his 42 3-point attempts. Hope to continue to see those numbers trend up with improved percentage and volume as a sophomore. It’ll be interesting to see how Curry develops as a ball handler and decision maker, he’s got a ways to go after posting a negative assist to turnover ratio as a freshman but does flash the ability to be a primary creator. Currently I think his best position is as a wing guard, but it wouldn’t shock me if he developed into a more natural point or combo guard as he matures. Lots of upside with Curry as he’s been offered by Cincinnati, Texas A&M, Illinois and Kent State already.
I was really impressed with the IQ and maturity of Evans as a freshman. A kid who seemed to get it from the first time I watched him last June, Evans impacts the game in a variety of ways. At the varsity level as a freshman, Evans played a role as a complimentary piece who could knock down an open shot, make the extra pass and defend. When playing against players his own age at the grassroots level, Evans is able to show off more of his on-ball creation and higher offensive volume. I expect Evans to continue to impress with All Ohio Red 15 U and am excited to watch him in Memphis in a few weeks. One of the top prospects from central Ohio’s 2027 class, Evans is a name to watch over the next few years.
Tyson was a prospect who impressed at our Freshman showcase back in the Fall and followed it up with a strong freshman season for Lakota West. One of the better shooters from the 2027 class, Tyson shot 40% from 3-point range and 75% from the foul line. Despite having a scorers mentality, I was also impressed with the secondary play-making Tyson showed by making smart decisions with the basketball. I also liked his effort defensively, Tyson moved his feet and that end and was active. Still made some mistakes that are normal for a freshman playing varsity but overall I thought Tyson showed promise on that end of the floor. Tyson also having two of his better games of the season against city rival Lakota East stood out to me, scoring 12 and 21 points in two meetings. With Curry and Tyson, Lakota West has a lot to work with in the 2027 class from the guard position.
Notable Watchlist Players
North Canton Hoover has a really impressive offensive system that’s centered around unselfish passing and off-ball movement. Hershberger is a perfect fit for their team with his basketball IQ and perimeter shooting ability. With a couple huge games as a freshman, Hershberger got on our radar and is a name we’ll continue to monitor next season. With so many returning pieces, North Canton Hoover should compete for a conference title in the always competitive federal league.
Another guard who went to our fall freshman showcase and stood out, Price can do a variety of things on both ends of the court. Good size for a wing guard and a quick first step, Price is tough to stop on drives to the basket. A guard who can knock down perimeter shots as well, Price can score it multiple ways. Expect Price to be a name we continue to hear about as Maumee Valley Country Day has a very talented 2027 class.
Highlights
Very rare to find a double-digit scorer as a freshman in the GCL, but that’s exactly what Waters managed to achieve for McNicholas this past season. A very skilled guard who can really shoot it from the outside, Waters had 20+ point scoring games against Kentucky powerhouse Covington Catholic and Ohio state champion Kettering Alter. Hope to see Waters develop physically this off-season, focusing on getting stronger and able to handle contact. 174 of his 226 field goal attempts were from 3-point range. That shows Waters is an elite shooter but not enough of a threat to drive past defenders and score just yet. Another number that shows his elite shooting ability? Try 91.8% from the foul line. One of the top shooters in Ohio’s 2027 class, hoping to see Waters start to expand his game and find other ways to impact winning over the next few years.
