About Pj
Expert Analysis

PJ was running the floor in a way that not many 6’7 forwards can on Tuesday night. He has a long stride, good straight line speed, and can also fluidly weave through defenders while handling the ball to get to the basket. Pounds was a threat in transition because of how he could glide to the rim to finish off the glass or explode off the floor for a dunk. On the defensive end he has some strength to hold his ground on the block, and was also a shot blocking threat from the helpside. Utilizes his physical attributes to make big plays in the paint on both ends of the floor.

PJ was another player who came in off the bench and provided an immediate spark for his team. DeLaSalle scored a couple of quick buckets but then got into a rut offensively. PJ came in and changed that as he was putting himself in the right place at the right time to receive dump-off passes and power up to the basket. With a point guard as good as Nas Whitlock, PJ knew he just had to find a small pocket of space and Whitlock was going to get him the ball. Once that happened Pounds was just too big and too explosive to stop from finishing. He threw down some powerful dunks that got the crowd going, as well as showing his touch off the glass. PJ’s dominance inside provided a nice change of pace from a team that is very guard dominated. He finished with 20 points on 9-12 shooting.

PJ held down the painted area for DeLaSalle on Saturday and was tough to match up with, factoring in the combination of his size and ability to move. The 6’7” forward did a great job altering opponent’s shots and playing lockdown interior defense without fouling. He had a sequence in the second half where he pinned a shot off the glass then ran in transition to receive a pass and throw down a two-handed dunk. Plays like this show the advantages of having a player like PJ on the floor. He also crashed the offensive boards for a pair of second chance baskets and used his post skills to finish a tough layup over a defender. Pounds finished with 11 points.

PJ had 9 points on Saturday night, and in such a low scoring matchup those 9 points were key. Pounds started off the game rolling to the hoop, catching, and exploding off the floor for a one handed dunk over the top of the defender. That was followed up a bit later in the half as he took his man off the dribble on the baseline and exploded off the floor for another dunk over the top of his man. That type of athletic ability is rare to find in a 6’6-6’7 big, and it allows PJ to make big plays around the rim. Utilized it as well to hold CDH’s starting big to just 2 points in the win.

PJ put together a really nice game to lead his team to a close win on Sunday. He has a strong frame to produce inside, but is also agile enough to make some plays on the wing. Mixed in some physical post scores with transition dunks and a few drives showcasing a solid handle to get all the way to the rim. PJ has above the rim athleticism that he uses to throw down dunks, pull in rebounds, and defend bigger than his size both on the block and as a shot blocking threat. Had a few finishes through contact in which defenders just bounced right off of him because of how strong he attacks the rim.
