Expert Analysis

Johnson was quite impressive this weekend when I peeked in to watch Rocky Mountain HGAL (I’m not sure if that’s his full-time team, but that’s who he ran with at the HG NE Jam Fest). The 6-foot-1 guard is SUPER skilled with the ball in his hands and uses shifty ball-handling and great body control to get to his spots on the floor. He finishes quite effectively at the rim, but he also hits shots from the mid range and three, even with heavy contests. Johnson is relatively undersized, but he strikes me as a guy who could be on the scholarship cusp as a result of his skillset and offensive feel.

Montae stepped it up in his sophomore season and came more into his own. He showed that he could put the team on his back, and they can run the offense through him, and he delivers. He led the team to a 21-5 record as he put up 14.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists a game. Montae is a smooth scorer who is a 3-level scorer. He shot an impressive 43% from beyond the arc and ran the offense as their go-to scorer and playmaker. Very solid year for him.

Johnson has continued to ride his regular season play into the summer, showing he can consistently produce as a scorer. His jumper looked confident and reliable, especially from three, where he stretched the floor and kept defenses honest. With the ball in his hands he was steady and trustworthy, making smart decisions while still staying aggressive. He did a great job pushing the pace, getting his team into offense early and creating easy opportunities in transition. Johnson played with control and confidence, never forcing the action but always ready to capitalize. His scoring ability, composure and tempo made him a dependable and impactful guard throughout the weekend

has established his unselfishness by distributing the ball to open teammates and cashing in on assists and buckets of his own. Johnson’s elite shot-making added 11 points to his totals alongside a productive 6 assists and 2 steals in his second-round victory against Centaurus. Expect Johnson to continue exuding confidence whenever he’s on the hardwood.

Johnson has been on an absolute tear, and that surge has powered Cherry Creek’s recent run. The sophomore guard has scored in double figures in 10 straight games, setting the tone offensively while leading his team to six consecutive wins. He’s not just filling it up but he’s creating for others, reading defenses with sharp vision and delivering timely assists. On the other end his on ball defense has been relentless, disrupting opposing guards and igniting transition chances. When the game tightens, Johnson settles his team, controls the tempo and makes winning plays

has been a steady two-way presence for Cherry Creek. Averaging 14.1 PPG, 5.3 RPG, 3.8 APG, and 1.8 SPG while consistently impacting games on both ends. Playing with pace and confidence, Johnson thrives attacking off the dribble, scoring through contact, and creating second-chance opportunities with his rebounding from the guard spot. Johnson also shows strong court awareness, making timely reads in transition and half-court sets. His physicality and toughness on the hardwood, as well as his reliable scoring, have made him a key piece in Cherry Creek’s rotation throughout the season.

Johnson delivered an excellent all around performance against Doherty, showcasing the full depth of his game. Known for his scoring, he embraced the role of facilitator, running the offense with poise and precision. He broke down the defense with penetration into the lane that forced rotations, then fired crisp cross court passes to open shooters. Quick handles and smart cuts beat presses and zones, while his defensive intensity capped a complete performance

starts our top five off on an electric note, as he’s currently leading his team in scoring (15.2 PPG) while shooting 50 percent from downtown. What makes Johnson a top guard in Colorado is his natural playmaking abilities and IQ with the rock. You can always expect a perfect delivery from Johnson when he’s attacking downhill, looking for his teammates to dish the ball to. Expect more loud performances from the all-pro box state hooper.

Johnson has been running the floor like a true floor general through the first two games. He’s seeing passing lanes clearly, delivering crisp feeds to cutters in the paint, or collapsing defenses to create open looks on the perimeter. He’s constantly moving without the ball finding space for free threes while keeping defenses off balance. On the other end, he’s grabbing rebounds, applying pressure and setting a tone with active hands for steals. Johnson is controlling the game on both ends and setting the standard for his team

Montae enters as the No. 5 player in the conference, and he’s only a sophomore. He’s transitioning into a true point guard and keeps getting better every viewing, and we’ve seen him plenty of times. He shoots the 3 at a high clip, but is even better when he finishes creatively with his mid-range and at the basket. The most underrated aspect of his game is his passing, despite being a player who can light it up. Now it is about finding that perfect balance and applying pressure defensively. Montae is calm under pressure, everything comes naturally for him, and he’s as smooth as they come. With a bigger role at Creek and a chip on his shoulder, he’s poised to rise fast. Excited to see what it looks like for him when it matters. Prove me wrong.
