Johnson used The Expo to reinforce what we have believed about his game and he is ready for a bigger stage and a bigger role. He looked comfortable running the point, controlling the tempo, creating advantages and keeping the offense moving without taking himself out of scoring opportunities. His handle gives him the freedom to attack defenders and manufacture shots when possessions break down, and his three point shot is becoming a legitimate problem for defenses to solve. He played with poise and purpose throughout, showing the confidence of a guard who is ready to take another step. His showing only strengthened our belief that Johnson is ready for what comes next

Johnson has taken his game to another level this summer, showing significant growth as a lead guard and proving he can be trusted to run the point. His ability to see the floor and consistently find teammates has stood out, as he plays with his head up and is always looking to create something positive. Johnson does a great job keeping the offense moving while putting teammates in position to succeed, but defenses still have to respect his ability to score. His three point shot remains a major weapon, and that combination of playmaking and shooting is exactly why we want to see him at The Expo Showcase

Montae pieced together a solid overall event as Cherry Creek’s most reliable player at Colorado Live, and that work is why he was the team’s leading scorer a year ago and there will be high expectations for him in his junior year. He was able to create for himself off the dribble, attack mismatches, and maneuver PnRs. The game is coming easier and easier for him. What stands out most for me and his biggest weapon is how much separation he creates on iso situations. Montae doesn’t have to force too many shots, he gets rid of it quickly and gets it back, and now he’s finding ways to get the same kind of production but not using so much energy to get it done. His teammates are starting to catch up to playing alongside him instead of just watching him go, and that has allowed him to settle down a bit more as well. He’s consistently hitting the 3-ball right now, and with that, it’ll be on him to find the balance of wanting to go score more and being aggressive, but also making sure everyone is involved. He’s a natural scorer who gets hot in a hurry so we want to see him turn it up a bit more on both ends of the floor. He’s very close to being a complete player, and that is scary for the rest of the state. 

Johnson looks more and more like a seasoned veteran every time we see him, putting together back to back strong camp performances and showing why he is such a vital piece for Cherry Creek. The Bruins often go as Johnson goes, as he sets the tone with his leadership, poise and ability to make plays for others. His court vision continues to improve, and he is doing an excellent job reading defenses and finding teammates in the right spots. When his team needs a bucket, he is more than capable of stepping up and creating offense himself. His three point shot remains one of the strongest parts of his game, but what often gets overlooked is his ability to attack the lane, collapse defenses and consistently put pressure on opponents over the course of a game as he did throughout the tournament 

Montae is silky smooth, and that has always been his calling. A score-first guard that can read defenses and react before they get set, and when the defense takes something away, he can get his shot off. The 3-ball was falling this weekend, and he looks much more mature in his shot selection this season, with a year of being the focal point of the Creek offense. The game slows down for him against Regis, and he found other ways to be effective against East as he gets to his spots, and he’s also a very underrated passer. He’s willing to make the skip pass, he passes and cuts for open finishes, and is a 3-level scorer who defenses have to know where he’s at at all times. Creek won the Platinum division behind the play of their PG, and he picked up an offer from Metro State with his showing throughout the tournament. 

Johnson was quite impressive this weekend when I peeked in to watch Rocky Mountain HGAL (I’m not sure if that’s his full-time team, but that’s who he ran with at the HG NE Jam Fest). The 6-foot-1 guard is SUPER skilled with the ball in his hands and uses shifty ball-handling and great body control to get to his spots on the floor. He finishes quite effectively at the rim, but he also hits shots from the mid range and three, even with heavy contests. Johnson is relatively undersized, but he strikes me as a guy who could be on the scholarship cusp as a result of his skillset and offensive feel.

Montae stepped it up in his sophomore season and came more into his own. He showed that he could put the team on his back, and they can run the offense through him, and he delivers. He led the team to a 21-5 record as he put up 14.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists a game. Montae is a smooth scorer who is a 3-level scorer. He shot an impressive 43% from beyond the arc and ran the offense as their go-to scorer and playmaker. Very solid year for him. 

Johnson has continued to ride his regular season play into the summer, showing he can consistently produce as a scorer. His jumper looked confident and reliable, especially from three, where he stretched the floor and kept defenses honest. With the ball in his hands he was steady and trustworthy, making smart decisions while still staying aggressive. He did a great job pushing the pace, getting his team into offense early and creating easy opportunities in transition. Johnson played with control and confidence, never forcing the action but always ready to capitalize. His scoring ability, composure and tempo made him a dependable and impactful guard throughout the weekend

The sophomore guard has scored in double figures in 10 straight games, setting the tone offensively while leading his team to six consecutive wins. He’s not just filling it up but he’s creating for others, reading defenses with sharp vision and delivering timely assists. On the other end his on ball defense has been relentless, disrupting opposing guards and igniting transition chances. When the game tightens, Johnson settles his team, controls the tempo and makes winning plays
