About Cal
Expert Analysis

Calhoon may not filling up the scoring column every game, but the 5-foot-10 junior finds ways to impact the game. Cal was tasked with guarding the leading scorer, Trevor Verhagen Trevor Verhagen who is a few inches taller than Calhoon in Thursday night’s game. He was able to contain and disrupt the flow of Verhagen’s game in this matchup, keeping him below his average on the night, and making every look extremely difficult. Calhoon may be one of the more underrated defenders in the 2027 class with his quickness, physicality, and high motor to compete on the defensive end. If Calhoon is your matchup, you are in for a long night of difficult shots. Calhoon only scored two points in this game, but he was excellent at getting downhill for the 23-1 Irish. Cal has great court vision in transition and utilizes his speed to keep defenders guessing in the halfcourt. He was very aggressive on the offensive glass as well on Thursday night, generating extra opportunities for Freedom against Little Chute’s zone defense. Calhoon competes for a talented Team 1848 squad in the club season.

Calhoon may not be the tallest player on the floor for Freedom, but he makes up with it with his strength, quickness, and relentless motor. Cal plays an important role for the Irish as a secondary ball and sometimes, primary ball handler when teams deny

the basketball. Calhoon is shifty with his quick crossover and can blow by defenders on straight line drives. Cal was able to get to the rim and finish several times, despite Lakeside Lutheran’s bigger guards defending on the backside. Calhoon had 10 in Saturday’s game, and averages 9.4ppg on the season. He is not only able to create shots for the Irish, but he typically guards the other teams best perimeter player. Oftentimes you will see Calhoon harassing the other team’s primary guard the full 84 feet, all 36 minutes. Cal is a critical piece for the Irish, as they wrap up their NEC title defense and quest to play in the state tournament in back to back seasons.

Cal was all over the floor coming up with stops for Freedom. Though often the smallest guy on the floor, Cal is lightning quick, and competes with a lot of toughness defensively. He was working hard to slide his feet and cut off opposing guards, came flying in for some rebounds among taller players, and was able to take a hit to draw a couple of charges throughout the game. Offensively he has a quick first step to get into dangerous areas, forcing the defense to collapse and create openings for his teammates.

team, Cal was able to get into the lane just about any time he wanted to, and from there could make plays as a finisher or facilitator. Did a nice job playing off two feet, allowing him to pivot and kick it out if there wasn’t a play to make at the rim. Cal had a pair of ankle-breaking crossovers that had his team fired up, with both leading to two points at the rim for his team.
