Jacob Meyer Jacob Meyer 6'2" | PG Holy Cross Covington | 2023 #170 Nation GA is ELITE:
The Junior has been hovering in the top 10 of the 2023 rankings for a couple of years now but he made a statement with his play on Thursday night. Meyer had 42 points on 18-29 shooting and was unstoppable on the offensive end. The lone weakness he showed was his three point shooting as he went 2-10 from three for the game. The guard is an early commitment to Western Kentucky and showed he may be the most explosive athlete in the state as he finished several big time dunks including a poster on an unsuspecting Douglass defender. If he were in any other graduating class in the state, Jacob would likely be the top ranked player in the state.
Douglass’ Young Guards Showed Up:
This was my second viewing of Douglass this week after watching them lose to Lexington Catholic on Tuesday but they were much better in this comeback win. Their young guards made the difference and probably are going to determine the Broncos ultimate ceiling this season. Freshman Aveion Chenault Aveion Chenault 6'3" | SG Frederick Douglass | 2025 State KY was named player of the game after a 12 point game and fellow freshman Armelo Boone Armelo Boone 6'3" | SG Frederick Douglass | 2025 State KY kicked in 8 more in the win. 20 points combined may not seem like a lot but the two also harassed the ball handlers for Holy Cross and helped Douglass to battle back from being down 10+ for a lot of the second half and steal a win at the buzzer.
LCA Continues to Improve:
The Eagles are very young. In my second viewing of them in the last 5 days, they competed against a Great Crossing team that could be a dark horse to win the region. In this particular game, Sophomore Brayden Mirus Brayden Mirus 6'1" | PG Rowan County | 2024 State KY poured in 18 points and scored in a variety of ways. LCA has to be one the short list of youngest teams in the state but they continue to improve and will be a threat to make some noise in March if they can get everyone going on the same night.
Great Crossing has a Bright Future:
Several of GC’s 2024 kids took advantage of the SB 128 ruling and became 2025s including Vincent Dawson III Vincent Dawson III 6'5" | SG Great Crossing | 2025 State #327 Nation KY , Junius Burrell Junius Burrell 5'8" | PG Great Crossing | 2025 State KY and Christian Martin Christian Martin 5'11" | CG Great Crossing | 2025 State KY . But the difference maker for the Warhawks is 6’10 Freshman Malachi Moreno Malachi Moreno 6'11" | C Great Crossing | 2025 State #21 Nation KY . Moreno had 19 points and 15 rebounds in Thursday’s game and showed improved finishing around the rim. A year or so ago, Malachi couldn’t finish anything and had the awkward look of a baby giraffe at times on the court. Now that his growing has slowed down, the big man has gotten more athletic and smooth around the bucket. Add Gage Richardson Gage Richardson 6'5" | SG Great Crossing | 2025 State KY to the list of impact freshmen and 6’6 Sophomore Jeremiah Godfrey Jeremiah Godfrey 6'7" | PF Great Crossing | 2024 State KY for GC and they are the type of core that will be on the list of state title contenders for the next several years.
