We are only a few weeks away from the first scrimmages in the lead up to the 2025-26 KHSAA basketball season. The excitement level for this year is high. This is the first time in a few years that we haven't had a few teams that are clearly ahead of the pack in the race for the state title. I am going to be previewing all 16 regions by breaking down the top 5 teams and the top 5 college prospects in each region. Being a top 5 college prospect and being a top 5 player in the region are not the same thing. There are a lot of really good high school players in Kentucky who are not necessarily great college prospects. Here's a look at the top 5 teams and prospects in the always competitive first region.

Langhi is a big and versatile player who has worked his way on to the radar of schools like Illinois in recent months. The son of a former NBA player, Matthew still hasn't come anywhere near his potential.

Holding an early offer from UT-Martin, Rickard has developed a ton in the last few years. A good rim protector with a versatile skill set, Wyatt has the potential to gobble up a bunch of new D1 offers in the next 9-12 months.

Only a Sophomore, Adams has great positional size and skill. Aaron is comfortable both inside and out as a scorer and could be a dangerous wing as his ball handling tightens up. He will ultimately be judged on his ability to guard big wings.

A tough guard prospect who can fill up a stat sheet in a hurry, Woodfork is one of the most impactful transfers in the state this season. After having to score a ton of points for Tilghman the last few years, Miles should be able to act more as a facilitator for the Mustangs this season.

One of the state's top freshmen, Mayes already has the attention of first region coaches after averaging 13 points and 4 rebounds per game as an 8th grader last year. St. Mary is primed to make some noise this year and Griffin has a chance to stake a claim to being one of the best players in the region for the next 4 years.
