Expert Analysis

Surratt just ended a really strong career as one of the top players in Lexington over the last decade. DeMarcus is perhaps the best athlete in this class. A quick leaper who averaged 19 points this season while shooting nearly 60% from the field, Surratt is headed to Bellarmine for his college basketball career.

Willing his team to a first round victory, Surratt is a flat out competitor on the court. Making a huge impact on both ends of the floor, it was fitting that the game ended on a Surratt steal when Louisville Butler was attempting to tie the game. Making numerous strong drive and finishes, I was impressed by Surratt’s footwork as a slasher on Friday night. One of the top players on one of the top teams in Kentucky, Surratt is one of my favorite players in the state to watch.

Surratt is the most explosive athlete at a guard spot in this class. DeMarcus can take flight at any point and makes a lot of highlights out of anyone foolish enough to jump with him. If his jumper is consistent this season, Surratt will be one of the toughest individual matchups in the state this year.

Frederick Douglass took a tough loss but it was not for a lack of impact from Surratt at both ends of the court. One of the top athletes in the state, Surratt had four or five plays in the first half that were jaw dropping. Whether it’s a transition dunk, a monster blocked shot or an acrobatic layup finish, Surratt makes plays that nobody else on the court can make. If Surratt continues to improve as a ball handler and shooter, he can be an all-conference level player at the Division I level.

Surratt is an explosive athlete who is headed to Bellarmine for his college career. DeMarcus is one of the toughest players to guard in the region and has the potential to average 25+ points per game this year on a very talented Douglass team. If his jumper is hitting, there is not an easy answer for how to stop Surratt.

Perhaps the best athlete in the class, Surratt has been loading up on D1 offers over the last 6 months and is a very popular name with college coaches right now in the Midwest and as far away as Boston University. DeMarcus is an explosive guard who can play on or off the ball and can be a good shooter when he’s able to get into his jump shot and is able to really elevate over defenders.

DeMarcus started the first live period with a 30 point game that led to two new scholarship offers for the big guard. While the rest of July was not as explosive for Surratt, he ended his AAU career with close to double figure D1 offers and is lining up official visits for the whole fall. With a big Senior season, DeMarcus could be firmly in the mix as Mr. Basketball.

The clear bright spot in Kentucky’s loss on Sunday, Surratt was the driving force behind cutting what was once a 30+ point deficit all of the way down to 10 points. Surratt led a 21-3 run in the middle of the second half showcasing his elite explosiveness with putback dunks, transition finishes, and pull-up jump shots. The Fredrick Douglass High School star finished with 27 points on 10-14 shooting from the field.

DeMarcus had a hot start to the AAU season after a really strong finish to his Junior season. His momentum slowed just a bit after a minor injury caused him issues during the live period a couple of weeks ago. Surratt is primed for a big June with his Douglass team that has thoughts of cutting down nets in Rupp Arena next March.
