Expert Analysis

Mayes is a crafty playmaker who would be more well known if not for the fact that he plays so far over in Western Kentucky and plays his AAU out of state. Griffin does a great job of playing with pace and knows when to change speeds with the ball in his hands. It will be interesting to track his progress over the next couple of years. St. Mary has a lot of young talent and could be a threat in the first region next season.

Mayes opened the weekend with a 22 point performance in a win over Lu Dort Brookwood Elite and while I didn’t get to catch that game, he stood out in the game I caught as Tennessee Impact 15 U defeated KL Power 5. Mayes showed the ability to play slow and under control with the ball in his hands, using his size as a taller primary ball handler to shield himself from defenders and get to his spots. Able to make the simple passes to his teammates, Mayes helped generate good looks on a team that shared the basketball well. Add in the fact Mayes played disciplined defense and forced some turnovers with opposing guards attempting to drive into traffic against him. Already ranked as a top 10 prospect in Kentucky’s 2029 class, Mayes certainly showed why he is regarded as one of the top guards in the state for his grade.

Griffin is a player whose exposure is limited by the fact that he lives all the way over in far Western Kentucky and plays AAU for an out of state program. A crafty guard who plays predominantly on the ball for St. Mary but is just as capable of playing as a shooting guard and secondary attacker. Averaging 15 points and 5 rebounds for a very young St. Mary team, Mayes is a name to keep tabs on in this loaded class.

One of the state’s top freshmen, Mayes already has the attention of first region coaches after averaging 13 points and 4 rebounds per game as an 8th grader last year. St. Mary is primed to make some noise this year and Griffin has a chance to stake a claim to being one of the best players in the region for the next 4 years.

Mayes had a big 8th grade season for St Mary last year and looks to have a bigger year this year. Griffin is comfortable playing on or off of the ball and can excel at either. While he’s not a player that I’ve been able to see a whole lot, Mayes has a lot of potential and is a name to monitor moving forward because he could be a difference maker in the first region as soon as this season.

Mayes is a high-IQ point guard with advanced poise, vision, and leadership for his age. As an 8th grade varsity starter, he averaged around 12 points per game and led the First Region in assists, showcasing excellent court awareness and the ability to control tempo. He’s a consistent shooter at over 40% from three and makes sound decisions under pressure. Mayes plays with maturity, defends with energy, and brings a team-first mindset. With his playmaking instincts, shot-making, and competitive edge, he projects as one of the top young guards in the region.

Mayes had an impressive 8th grade season as a starter for St Mary and had a smooth game the one time I saw him in AAU this spring.

Griffin averaged a dozen points per game at the varsity level this past season. He clearly has a high IQ and a smooth game when watching him play. A good shooter (over 40% from three) and a heady playmaker, I look forward to seeing more of Mayes in the near future.
