We'll look at both state title contenders, as well as preseason All State teams. Here's a look at some of the contenders for the VHSL Class 6 classification.

Favorite: South Lakes

While Class 6 has to be among the deepest, particularly in the Northern VA part where most of the schools representing the classification are, it's hard to pick against the defending state champs South Lakes. They are coming into the season with tons of confidence, returning a number of top players from last season, and with the experience of winning the state championship they are set to have a chance to repeat this year. They return senior Michigan State commit [player_tooltip player_id='1410534' first='Jordan' last='Scott'] who's ranked #3 in the Prep Hoops 2025 rankings and won the state player of the year last year, as well as junior forward [player_tooltip player_id='2347788' first='Merrick' last='Rillstone'], along with other key pieces as well.

Other Contenders

Oscar Smith

2025 [player_tooltip player_id='2340873' first='Jacobi' last='Harper']

Smith comes in as the reigning 6A Champions and a team to beat as they are returning much of their talent from last year and have another year of experience under their belt. Led by the senior backcourt trio of [player_tooltip player_id='2340871' first='Anthony' last='Lewis'], [player_tooltip player_id='2452244' first='Cameron' last='Walters'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2340873' first='Jacobi' last='Harper'], the Tigers are as deep as they come and with the experience they gained in an almost undefeated season last year, as well as they chemistry they got playing together this summer, they'll be a tough matchup for anyone and should be able to compete for a state championship this season.

CG Woodson

2027 [player_tooltip player_id='2353657' first='Kaylen' last='Chilton']

Woodson is coming off a very good season last year and return most of their top players, and they have depth across the board at almost every position and their Head Coach Doug Craig has experience winning state championships in the last decade. A veteran team that has been together a long time, the Cavaliers have great chemistry, are a very connected group on both ends of the floor and have a lot of firepower from different players who can produce in a number of different ways. Senior guards [player_tooltip player_id='1767542' first='Theo' last='Burke'] and David Guntumur are back to run the show, senior forward [player_tooltip player_id='2242390' first='Noah' last='Limbago'] is one of the more versatile players in the area, junior wing [player_tooltip player_id='1963550' first='Ryan' last='Corallo'] can fill it up and sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='2353657' first='Kaylen' last='Chilton'] was one of the best freshman in the state last year and has everything to be a very special player right now.

Hayfield

2025 [player_tooltip player_id='2242382' first='Alex' last='McFarlane']

The Hawks have been one of the most successful teams in Northern VA over the past five years, led by Head Coach Carlos Poindexter who won back-to-back state championships in 2022 and 2023 while having a very good season with their new look team last year. The experience they gained last year will bold well for them, as they have been great during the preseason and have one of the deepest groups in the Northern VA area with a number of players who can play different roles and be the guy at different times. 6'5” senior wing [player_tooltip player_id='2242382' first='Alex' last='McFarlane'] will be in the running for Region C Player of the Year, seniors [player_tooltip player_id='1598943' first='Parker' last='Cage'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2242396' first='Aaron' last='McFarlane'] add firepower in the backcourt and they have two transfer juniors in wing Duece Trotter and forward [player_tooltip player_id='1963395' first='Cameron' last='Prosper'] who provide athleticism on both ends as well.

Potomac

Potomac was a dynasty of such back in the early 2010s, and they've been slowly rebuilding toward that over the past few years and have a very good roster this year to make a deep run. They're arguably the favorites to win Region B, with a nice mix of experienced returners and some very talented young players as well. Sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='2353606' first='Amani' last='Asare'] who transferred from Bishop O'Connell is a super talented guard who can fill it up and will be in contention for Region B Player of the Year, the junior front court duo [player_tooltip player_id='1963528' first='Medwyn' last='Opoku-Arthur'] and Kong Twanga bring athleticism and defensive versatility, and senior wing [player_tooltip player_id='2540461' first='Jordan' last='Adams'] and junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='1963537' first='Brayden' last='Woods'] provide depth as well.

Westfield

2026 [player_tooltip player_id='2252302' first='William' last='Robinson']

Westfield has slowly been building toward a big run since Head Coach Kevin Harris took over two years ago, and the Bulldogs have one of the deepest teams around with a group of juniors that are highly impressive. While many would say it may next year that they can get it done, there's plenty of talent on this team that will make them tough to beat, particularly with their firepower in the backcourt and their versatility to play positionless basketball and create mismatches, while also being very unselfish as well. Junior guards [player_tooltip player_id='1782684' first='Isaiah' last='Brown'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2252294' first='Jemon' last='Price'] can absolutely fill it up in bunches and knock down shots from deep at a high clip, junior guard [player_tooltip player_id='1963548' first='Colin' last='Stemberger'] is a natural floor general, the duo of 6'5” [player_tooltip player_id='2252302' first='William' last='Robinson'] and 6'6” [player_tooltip player_id='2252298' first='Mathias' last='Lee'] give them versatility and athleticism in the front court and they have a couple young x-factors in sophomore guard [player_tooltip player_id='2623725' first='Jay' last='Capel'] and freshman wing [player_tooltip player_id='2918960' first='Malachi' last='Lee'].

Patriot

Patriot is another team that has been extremely successful over the past five years, and while a state championship has eluded Head Coach Sherman Rivers he always has one of the most well coached and competitive teams that can take down anyone. They have a new look roster after graduating three of their top guys last year, but he has guys that have been waiting and are ready to show that they can make a deep run themselves right now. 6'5” sophomore wing [player_tooltip player_id='2575696' first='Jamison' last='Ross'] is a division one prospect who is ready for a breakout season with his versatility and ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor, senior [player_tooltip player_id='2452258' first='Carter' last='Crumity'] can stretch the floor and score in a number of ways, juniors [player_tooltip player_id='2347781' first='Kai' last='Wilcox'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2347783' first='Carson' last='Cook'] have steadily improved over the past few years and they have a deep group of role players that play the right way and will do whatever it takes to win.
