The Expo: Team Three Breakdown

This past weekend was the Prep Hoops Washington Expo at the Hidden Valley Boys and Girls Club. The event included over 60 players from across the state, ranging from top prospects in their class to hungry, under-the-radar hoopers looking to make a statement. We saw some great competition from the 3v3 games to the main event, the 5v5 session, along with some highlight plays and hard work. We'll be going team by team to break down each player's performance and then wrap up with all-showcase teams. I'm kicking it off with some analysis of team three.    A really quick and intuitive point guard who was able to effectively use that combo on both ends. Got some sneaky steals on unsuspecting ballhandlers, pushed the pace and ran the break well, and was able to put some quick moves on defenders (spins, give-and-go's) to get to the hoop and score.     Profiled as a shooter who fills in the gaps with great hustle. He was constantly hustling up and down the court, was engaged and involved on every trip. He also shot the ball efficiently from 3-point, both in the 3v3 and 5v5 portions.     He's a tall shooter who played controlled and was able to affect the game in different ways from both outside and closer in. He was good spotting up from behind the arc, also hit some shots getting to the middle and pulling up around the foul line. Also found some lanes to attack the glass and showed poise passing out of deep position and facing up to see the court.     Physically looked the part. Has size, strength, and mobility at 6'5. Had a few nice moments attack the paint off the dribble from outside and was especially effective in the 3v3 portion with more space available to attack.     His day was cut short due to a tweaked hammy but Ford was a dominant downhill presence while he was out there. Pretty much unstoppable once he got defenders backpedaling and had several dunks high above the rim. Did a nice job swinging his hips open before attacking downhill and winning that first step. Ran the floor well and went physically unmatched most of the day.     Really excelled with shots away from the rim. Hit several tough midrange shots either facing up or shooting the turn around, and was able to shoot through tight contests. Also did a good job getting to open spots around the arc and being ready to take and drain threes. Was great with dives down the middle, though the ball didn't find him in there as often as it should have.     Was a force inside finishing at the rim and working the glass for second, third, and fourth shots. Played through a lot of bodies in the paint but was exceptionally good in transition as a ballhandler, taking it as far as the defense allowed him, and working for quite a few coast-to-coast buckets.     Another physically impressive player on team three, Wettlaufer showed some versatility with a good-looking shot from 3-point and some power finishes at the rim. Could be a kid who takes a big step forward this season and definitely showed the potential to rise up his class over the next two years.
