About Gavin
Expert Analysis
Robbie Hodin | Prep Hoops Scout
Wettlaufer has an intriguing skillset. The 6-foot-9 forward is super strong and tough in the paint, so he’s able to defend opposing big men comfortably and rebound it well. But he also has good footwork in the paint and can finish with both hands, not to mention the fact that he sees the floor well for his size and can throw down dunks in transition. Wettlaufer probably projects as a D3 player unless he’s able to improve his athleticism and strength to the point where he can effectively guard bigs down low and guards on the perimeter—perhaps a post-grad year could help him there.

Wettlaufer, a forward out of Worcester Academy in Massachusetts, makes his first appearance in the rankings at #173. Wettlaufer is a newcomer to Worcester Academy that has made great strides with his game since we last saw him in the summer. He’s got a big frame at 6’9″, looks like he’s put on some solid muscle, and is playing with more assertiveness around the rim as a finisher. He does a nice job of rim running in transition, is capable of finishing in a variety of ways with his back to the basket, and has good instincts when coming over from the help side as a shot blocker.

Gavin has been an absolute monster down low for Bellevue this season. He does a fantastic job at positioning himself deep in the paint, getting open for an easy entry pass. His soft touch around the rim has been apparent all year. His toughness can’t be questioned either since he is always putting his body on the line for rebounds and to protect the paint.

Gavin has all the makings to be a top player in this entire class and with Bellevue likely having a solid role for him, he is ready to thrive and excel at the varsity level. He has a fantastic frame, being able to move his feet well down-low and run the court in transition smoothly. Wettlaufer’s deep shot is effective too so defenders can’t afford to take a second off when guarding him or else he will make them pay.

Another physically impressive player on team three, Wettlaufer showed some versatility with a good-looking shot from 3-point and some power finishes at the rim. Could be a kid who takes a big step forward this season and definitely showed the potential to rise up his class over the next two years.

Wettlaufer is a kid with some good size who also exhibited some soft touch in the opening session. First, he hit a paint turnaround, then he stepped out and hit a corner 3. But the forward can also finish with some grit inside and got up for a big dunk on a dive to the hoop. He also showed some good strength to go through guys at the rim.
