About Gelonni
Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Ervin has been one of the premier rim defenders so far this year and was blocking just about everything coming his way in their last game against West Seattle. He’s been able to take advantage of some height advantages early on in the year, working the glass for put-backs and showing he can cover ground inside, fight through multiple defenders, and finish with some touch. But he’s also done a nice job of locating teammates behind the defense when he operates from the top of the paint.

Ervin has a chance to put up some gaudy numbers this season as a dominant paint force and phenomenal front-court athlete. There won’t be many players who can match his size, let alone his mobility and leaping ability. Even when Garfield doesn’t directly play through the big man, he has the skills to wreak havoc on the offensive glass and at times be a one-man wrecking crew.

Ervin was not only one of the most powerful finishers at the event, he also showed he can get to the hoop from different spots, using moves from the backdown or facing up. He was a killer scoring around the paint, working through, around, and over defenders to finish at the hoop or with the midrange jumper. He defended the rim on the other end and showed an ability to push the ball on the break and played with high effort to beat guys to spots and clean up second-chance points.

Was a force inside finishing at the rim and working the glass for second, third, and fourth shots. Played through a lot of bodies in the paint but was exceptionally good in transition as a ballhandler, taking it as far as the defense allowed him, and working for quite a few coast-to-coast buckets.

Ervin also had a bright game for Beauchamp Elite in their win over UBC Elite. Gelonni is a terrific athlete who excels in rim running and shot blocking which would project him as a big man at the next level. He is very mobile but doesn’t float around the perimeter very often because he can be so effective in the paint. He can also be a good option in the pick-and-roll and has good post-footwork. One thing Ervin can improve on is his activity on the glass, which would be important for him to be a true 5. He was still very good despite that and went for 11 Points and 3 Blocks.

Ervin has continued to blossom defensively as the best rim defender in his class. He’s super bouncy at 6-foot-9 and is a force sending shots back at the rim. That defensive dynamism has also seemed to help him be more aggressive and effective at the other end as he continues to show incredible potential as a rim-runner and lob threat.

Ervin has had some nice stat lines throughout the spring and has flourished as an impact defender and rim runner. He has some ridiculous bounce and has been playing with a great motor on both ends by the rim, rebounding his tail off and looking to dunk/block everything.
