Being the starting point guard for a demanding, but fair, coach isn’t always easy. It’s really not all that easy when that coach also happens to be your father. Such is the case for Walz, who has learned the game from his father — highly successful Wisconsin Lutheran coach Ryan Walz. You can tell almost immediately that Riley has been schooled properly in the right way to play the game. Whether he’s guarding with purpose and determination on the perimeter or getting into the lane off the bounce to create opportunities for his teammates, Walz plays with stellar basketball instincts. He had it going offensively for Pro Lane in its matchup with 24: UP P32 on Sunday as well as he scored a team-best 18 points, drilling four three-point shots while also finding the bottom of the net off of drives to the basket. His strong play helped Pro Lane stay within striking distance of an outstanding team before eventually fading late and losing, 64-51.,

Minnesota Fury had no answer for the Wisconsin Lutheran point guard in the first half on Sunday. Although he’s more of a true floor general in the winter, Riley was showcasing his scoring ability on Sunday in Appleton. In the first half alone Riley drained multiple threes, and got to the rim for three more buckets. If you let him catch in space or went under a screen against him, Riley was simply pulling up and connecting from beyond the arc. Coachable player who handles it well under pressure, gets all of his teammates involved, and works hard on the defensive end of the floor.

is another player on this list who sacrifices individual numbers for team success. We’ve seen flashes of him being able to score in bunches as he’s an accurate shooter (41% from three), but with all of the talent around him he excels at getting his teammates involved. Riley provides accurate post-entry passes, provides well timed passes to his shooters, and can push the tempo in transition. He just knows how to make winning plays, and is perhaps the unsung hero on this undefeated Wisconsin Lutheran team.

The son of Head Coach Ryan Walz, Riley is an intelligent, tough, and skilled guard that contributes in a variety of ways for the Vikings. Walz rarely turns the ball over in the Princeton style offense for Wisconsin Lutheran, and is constantly looking to dump off passes to his talented teammates. The six foot junior guard averages 3.4 assists per game and is able to dish out the ball both in transition and in the half court. Like many coach’s sons Riley shoots the ball at an efficient rate from beyond the three point line and locks down his matchup on a nightly basis. He is shooting over 40 percent from three and has taken 70% of his shots from downtown. The Wisco’s squad is supremely talented, but you cannot downplay how essential guys like Walz are for their overall success as they seek their third straight state title.

Walz may not get the attention of some of Wisco’s other players, but he’s a very good guard as well. Riley is a high IQ point guard who rarely makes mistakes on the ball, and puts his teammates in good positions to make plays. Against Arrowhead he also showcased his sharpshooting ability as he put up a career high 14 points in a big win. One of those guys who always seems to be in the right place at the right time, and is unfazed on the ball in big moments.

Walz had an excellent game vs KL Power 5. Showcase great vision as a pass-first guard that created tons of problems vs an Excellent Power 5 Defense. P5 couldn’t do much full-court pressing because of his abilities as a playmaker that game.
