Expert Analysis
Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
Santiago unfortunately didn’t have his best stuff in his final high school game but still put together a gritty double-double to close out an accomplished four-year career. He was effective using his physicality and ball skills to work his way to spots near the rim where he converted with toughness in traffic. No basket was bigger than his putback of his own miss in the closing seconds to tie the game and force overtime. Santiago would finish with 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Marauders’ leading scorer on the day.

As battle-tested as it gets having started for the Marauders since his freshman year, Santiago showed no signs of nerves with the season on the line. The senior guard scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, getting himself going as a pullup shooter from both the midrange and beyond the arc to help bust open a one-possession game. His twisting layup in the fourth quarter around St. Joe’s’ shot-blocker seemingly captured the momentum for good. The St. Peter’s signee was also key as a primary ballhandler and facilitator throughout the first half with the Marauders’ point guard on the bench in foul trouble. It was the type of gritty two-way performance that Santiago has become known for across the state over the past four years.

brings a clear sense of toughness and selflessness that consistently benefits his team. In a gritty matchup against Hudson Catholic, the veteran combo guard was true to form—impacting the game on both ends with timely, difference making plays. Comfortable adapting to whatever the moment required, Santiago made composed and intelligent decisions with the ball, showcasing a confident handle and strong court vision, spraying the ball out to open shooters on the perimeter and hitting dump offs down low when he got deep in the paint. He balanced his playmaking with a sound scoring punch, finishing through contact at the rim and displaying soft touch in the paint. That offensive poise was matched by his physical and sturdy presence defensively. Santiago proved capable of guarding multiple positions, battling across the floor, and crashing the glass for key rebounds—once again underscoring his all around value to St. Peter’s.

A four-year starter, Santiago showed his steeliness as a grizzled vet with a workmanlike showing in a narrow loss to The Patrick School. The muscular scoring guard set the tone in the early going with his perimeter jumper and shot-creation ability in the midrange. Santiago showed his poise while making incisive decisions from the perimeter or in the teeth of the defense while also bringing a consistent physicality to the floor game on both ends as a finisher and versatile defensive presence alike. Santiago’s ability to impact across the stat sheet should bode well for his ability to contribute at the D1 level as he stays close to home for college.
