Expert Analysis
Eric Wallace | Prep Hoops Scout
Mills is a strong, fairly mobile junior forward who continues to show intriguing long-term upside. He is most effective operating in the midrange and around the paint, where he can use his strength and touch to score efficiently. At the same time, he has the ability to step out and knock down an open perimeter shot or attack a closeout with a straight-line drive to the rim.
He is a willing and capable rebounder who competes on the glass and embraces physical play inside. As his perimeter skill and overall polish continue to develop, Mills has the tools to grow into a versatile frontcourt prospect with expanding offensive range.

Bishop Ireton’s highest level prospect, Mills is a strong, fairly mobile forward who can play all over the floor. At this point he is at his best in the midrange and in the paint, but the junior has the ability to make an open perimeter shot or straight line drive a defender from the perimeter to the rim. Mills is a willing and capable rebounder and has plenty of upside.

Mills isa deceptive and skilled forward with polish in the post and excellent floor-spacing ability. Mills can produce in a variety of different roles, showing the ability to set the tone as a focal point or assert himself as needed. Although his foundation was developed as a post scorer, he’s visibly expanded his game off the bounce and along the perimeter. Mills can create for himself and others, and sees the floor well as a playmaker. Add in his rebounding presence, and it’s easy to see all the reasons why he’s attracting coaches. Final stat line against Winston Salem 12 (1-5 3-pt) points, 8 rebounds, and 2 assists.

-Mills turned in a near-flawless performance in a rivalry matchup against DM as an effective low post scorer capable of finishing well in traffic. The soft hands and rebounding IQ really stood out for Mills as he dominated the glass for the Mustangs to the tune of 6 offensive rebounds to extend possessions for his squad. Mills’ ability to put the ball on the floor has also improved as he is steadily becoming more comfortable attacking the rim with straight line drives. Mills served as an effective pick n pop target but also showed that he knows when he needs to roll to the rim and finished well around defenders trying to block his shot or take charges.

is someone I’ve been keeping my eye on since around this time of his Freshman season. Jayden outworks everyone on the court, and how hard he plays makes up for his lack of size. Jayden does an excellent job moving without the ball, and he is a great finisher at the rim. Jayden had 18 points in a McNamara win. It will be interesting to see Jayden’s recruitment as a big at his size, but right now, he is a very impactful player.

An efficient undersize forward who provides a steady, blue-collar approach to the game. Mills is a sturdy, unselfish post prospect with a high motor and willingness to do the dirty work offensively. Mills displays touch, cutting instincts and ability to score comfortable from 15 feet and in.

-Mills has really improved his conditioning and is moving much better laterally/in the open floor as a result, impacting the game as a rim-running big with a soft touch. His perimeter shooting ability on kickouts raises his value as a prospect that can impact winning without having plays called for him. The ball skills are coming along nicely as a passer out of the high and low post that has a solid bag of post moves to score as well. Really liked his defensive activity inside the arc during the Top 250 Expo, having a W/F prospect that can guard 3-5 would make him a valuable cog for the Mustangs this season.

-Mills was a 1st Team performer, showing an improved perimeter skillset as a shot-maker and passer from both the midrange as well as beyond the arc. Although he’s right handed he’s really good driving to his left and finishing with the left. Good hands on catches in traffic, good balance on spin moves and euro step moves in the paint. Willing passer off the bounce or from a standstill. Not a superhuman athlete but he times his shot blocks at the rim well and hustles to the defensive rebound to get it going the other way more quickly, second jump has really improved to finish better on putbacks. Needs to make better defensive recoveries back into the play after his matchup has already gotten by him.

-Mills has been on a mission this offseason and he continued the momentum from a 3SSB championship into The Expo with a very well-rounded performance. Mills has really sped up his decision-making process to make the read to shoot or attack off the dribble before he even catches the ball. The footwork and finishing ability in the paint are both consistently high-level with more face-up scoring options in his bag. Defensively he is playing more disciplined, staying down on shot attempts and working harder to avoid playing behind his matchup around the rim to cut down on his fouls. His willingness to make plays for his teammates off the bounce or from the high post make him a tough cover for opponents and a fun teammate to play with

-The long-term potential that HS and AAU coaches have been buzzing about is coming to fruition this AAU season as Mills prepares to step into a bigger role for McNamara in the fall. The touch around the basket and concentration has improved, with Mills converting offensive rebounds and touch passes off the bounce into easy buckets around the rim. His conditioning and stamina have improved to allow him more floor time to show what he can do as a play-finisher in the paint and a play-maker for others from the high post. With the skill level rapidly improving from 15 feet and in, Mills will need to add more muscle to his frame to bump with the top flight bigs in the WCAC but he seems well on his way
