Mark Miller | Prep Hoops Scout
The ball was finding the bottom of the net out of Kern’s hands during the first 10 minutes of 24: UP UA Rise’s win over Wisconsin PHD . He made five three-point shots during the first half of the contest as his team took charge early. Kern plays at a consistent pace and is quick to let go when the defense gives him a look at the basket. He also possesses good physical strength and can get to the basket off the dribble. Kern is a multi-year varsity performer at New Berlin West and one of the better players in the always competitive Woodland West Conference.

Even when it appeared one of Kern’s three-point baseline shots was off the mark late in the first half, it somehow managed to rattle in. Kern just shook his head in amazement as he retreated down court to play defense. It was that kind of day for New Berlin West. Kern had six three-point baskets and scored a game-high 22 points. In addition to his torrid shooting, Kern also scored a couple of baskets off drives to the hoop. He competes with good balance as he plays well off of two feet, and he has the physical strength to finish off drives to the basket.

Kern is a sturdy wing prospect who can score, both from the perimeter and off the bounce. He is a confident shooter and is willing to take shots a few steps outside the three-point arc. He finished with 21 points and really got it going in the second half when New Berlin West created separation from West Allis Hale. Kern’s combination of physical strength, skill and confidence on offense were big assets for the Vikings in their season-opening triumph.
