June's MD/DC 2027 Recruiting Notebook

The month of June has become one of the hottest months of the recruiting calendar given the amount of live recruiting events/showcases held around the country. While the recruiting landscape has adjusted due to several rule changes within college basketball over the years, we will see prospects being awarded with scholarship offers thanks to their play throughout the month.   Below, we'll reflect on some names who had busy months not only on the floor, but off the court as their phones were buzzing with opportunities.   2027 COMMITMENTS:    Duran marks our first commitment of the 2027 class as he announced his pledge to head coach Pat Skerry and the Towson Tigers on Tuesday. The 6'1"-6'2" combo guard will supply valuable floor-spacing as a lethal three-point marksman who showed in June that he can create for others off the bounce as well. Duran entered our top-10 at No. 9 in the updated rankings hours before announcing his commitment. This move should bode well for both Duran and the Tigers in a long-term lens.    2027 VISITS:   [player_tooltip player_id='2139297' first='J'Lon' last='Lyons'] stayed atop of the rankings in the latest update and unless something unforeseen happens, it'll be his spot to lose as we head into the last few updates for this class. There are several P5 programs pursuing the dynamic lead guard, who scheduled his first official visit with Syracuse for Sept. 11-13. Maryland and VCU among others are expected to lock down their dates with Lyons in the near future.   2027 OFFERS:    Woodard has been focusing on a core group of schools for some time now including Mississippi State, Oklahoma State and Rutgers, but more recently the likes of Providence and TCU have entered the picture. The plan as of now is for Woodard to set up his official visit for the fall and make a decision after getting to see each campus. There also could be an official list cut that takes place following Peach Jam, which should be a common theme for the 2027 prospects with established recruitments.     Condon's stock has soared since the beginning of the spring and as expected, many of those programs who extended offers made him a stop on their June recruiting schedule. Belmont, Boston College, Notre Dame, Northwestern and Syracuse had extended offers in May, but the new staff at NC State decided to get involved as well in early June. The 6'7" forward made many a believer in his ability to score it inside/out while providing value as a connector at both ends that fuels winning basketball.     Veney's recruitment expands across pretty much all levels of Division I basketball. With offers from various programs such as Butler, George Mason George Washington, Maryland and now from Delaware, Veney will have a healthy list of options to choose from that best fits his style of play and ability to impact as a freshman. He's a strong-framed combo guard who put together strong performances at Philly Live that demanded the attention from coaches courtside. Veney is in the process of getting his visits set to respective campuses, but last I was told, doesn't have a timeline in mind at the moment.     Taylor was one of the big winners of June as the combo forward racked up offers in bulk with his play at Philly and DC Live. The ball started rolling in May as Taylor gained plenty of fans with his play for [program_tooltip program_id='2076999' first='Team' last='Melo'] on the EYBL Circuit, but June was used as confirmation for many including Albany, Delaware, Drexel, Old Dominion, and Tennessee Tech, all of which extended offers to the St. John's (DC) product.     Jeffers has one of the higher ceilings in this class long term, but the potential is quickly turning into production and now standing close to 6'10" college coaches are jumping on board. There were a few who had the vision early, but now George Washington and UAB are in the running after Jeffers put together a few explosive outings in the two weekend of DMV Live. His promise as a rim presence is clear, but its the smaller aspect of his development over the last six months that has put him into another tier. With sustained production this month, you could see some more offers come his way.     The epitome of an anchor, Mancho did the heavy lifting for a Mount Carmel group who is still forming its identity after repeating as MIAA A Conference champions. Mancho will be expected to make things happen with his touches at the rim and spark action with his punishing screens, but the combination of his play with [program_tooltip program_id='2077005' first='Team' last='Thrill'] in May and Mount Carmel in June landed him offers from the likes of St. Bonaventure and Tennessee Tech.     Another big stock-riser for the month of June was Abass, who received his share of offers and a bump in our rankings to enter top-10 territory. FGCU, Kent State, La Salle, Loyola Chicago, Richmond and UTEP all extended offers to the versatile forward who proved himself as a toolsy four-man with inside/out ability throughout DMV Live play. His motor, presence on the glass and potential long-term to develop into a guy who could log minutes as a wing are all aspects that contribute to the uptick of college attention and willingness to invest in Abass.     College programs are prioritizing versatility more than ever when it comes to recruiting high school prospects because the more flexibility a prospect offers from a positional or skill standpoint gives them ability to fit them into their system next to the older players they've likely collected from the transfer portal. Carpenter is a name that has emerged on MM boards while HM programs are monitoring his development as a potential target in a few years. His showing through the two weekend at DMV Live strengthened those sentiments as Tennessee Tech, Towson and UMass Lowell all extended offers to the standout wing.     Tchoubfong was one of the top stock-risers of June proving his worth in his new threads and in the process, making believers out of Drexel, FGCU, Le Moyne and Wagner as all four programs extended offers to the 6'5" wing. His ability to present and take advantage of mismatches on the offensive end was evident. He can score it from all three levels based off his matchup. When he draws an opposing forward, he can space the floor out on the perimeter or attack them off closeouts where he gets to his spots with good balance. When a wing or someone with similar size is guarding him, Tchoubfoung can operate in the mid-post with his back to the basket and create angels in a variety of ways with crafty footwork, shot fakes, etc.     Grambling State jumped in the sweepstakes for two DMV combo guards during their time in PG County and one was McKenzie, a smooth southpaw scoring guard who did it at a high clip with the staff courtside. The 6'3" lefty is coming off an accomplished junior season that included leading Takoma Academy to the MDPSBBT Division B title and while he's put together a strong spring with [program_tooltip program_id='2077004' first='Team' last='Takeover'] Showcase, his work was put under the bright lights of DMV Live and he put on a show averaging over 26PPG.     Another guard that Grambling State offered was McCoy, another 6'3" combo guard, but is different than McKenzie mentioned above. McCoy is a strong-framed connector-type that can bring true two-way ability. He quickly increased his role during this first season at St. Frances in 2025-26 from coming off the bench to being inserted into the starting lineup in their pursuit of the Baltimore Catholic League trophy. While his offensive skillset isn't as refined as McKenzie's to date, he's taken strides in improving his pace off the dribble, but is at his best playing off the ball where he can attack gaps off second-side swings or getting out in the open floor where his speed and physicality allow for rim finishes.     It's going to be fun watching the rising senior class in the public schools landscape to see who emerges as the top prospect, but Colston will be heavily in the mix both from an individual production and winning standpoint. He logged some impressive scoring performances as a junior, but there's a high likelihood he'll do it with even greater consistency as a senior for JFK while making others around him better. He brings good positional size as a combo guard, range that extends to the parking lot and instincts to get buckets around the rim in a creative manner. Winston Salem State became the first program to offer Colston and I'd expect a boatload of other DII programs to jump in sooner rather than later.
