College programs are prioritizing versatility more than ever when it comes to recruiting high school prospects because the more flexibility a prospect offers from a positional or skill standpoint gives them ability to fit them into their system next to the older players they’ve likely collected from the transfer portal. Carpenter is a name that has emerged on MM boards while HM programs are monitoring his development as a potential target in a few years. His showing through the two weekend at DMV Live strengthened those sentiments as Tennessee Tech, Towson and UMass Lowell all extended offers to the standout wing.

The versatility that Carpenter brings to both end of the floors has certainly caught the attention of college coaches this month. His blend of size and athleticism make for a switchable defender between 3-to-4 positions at the high school level while his offensive skill set is easily translatable as a complementary piece in almost any system. The plus with the 6-foot-6 Swiss army knife comes with his ability to touch different aspects of the box score and when he isn’t scoring, it doesn’t mean his impact isn’t felt. He does his work on the glass, has improved as a playmaker now that he’s in a role that allows more freedom off the bounce and can be a disruptor in passing lanes as he reads the ball handler’s eyes an displays timely anticipation in causing deflections.

I think Carpenter has a real opportunity to thrive this summer given his role on this Durant team. Looking ahead to his senior season with Clinton Grace, he’ll have the needed confidence to take on a bigger role of the offense if what I’ve seen thus far this spring is a sign of what’s to come.
He’s keeping things simple playing off others and maintaining good spacing from the corners or the wing. If he doesn’t have an establishing lane to the cup, he’s using his a couple of dribbles to establish himself in the paint before rising up for fallaway shots with soft touch. Along with Daniels and Woodard, Carpenter is a lob threat in transition or if he’s given the ball early enough, has the athleticism to size up a contesting defender and flush it over top.
He finished the weekend averaging 8.3PPG, 3RPG and was active on the defensive end with 2.7SPG.

-Really loved Carpenter’s play in a comeback win over a super scrappy Team Iverson group, especially at the defensive end of the floor. Carpenter’s motor really stood out throughout the matchup as a physical wing defender that could chase guards around screens, switch onto bigs effectively and use his IQ to get around the seal for steals and deflections, and serve as a disruptive free safety off the ball adept at producing deflections. His positioning at the defensive end of the floor to force misses on perimeter jumpers or fade-away’s without fouling has really improved to keep him on the floor for longer stretches of time. His ability to trace the ball with his hands effectively really negated his matchup’s ability to pass the ball as he was switched onto different hot scorers to slow down their rhythm throughout the matchup.

Carpenter put together some nice moments early on Saturday and it all had to do with his aggression attacking the rim. Coming off a junior season where he played a key role for a tough Clinton Grace team, Carpenter will look to translate his skills on the EYBL stage with Durant 17s where his size, versatility and ability to make scoring opportunities by playing off others will come in handy. His athleticism in the open floor or on straight-line drives with a clear path for takeoff demanded the crowd’s attention before he made a play on the rim. He rebounded at a steady rate as well. Carpenter’s calling card for this team will be providing defensive versatility, impacting the glass and remaining efficient with his opportunities on offense. I think following that formula will make it pretty difficult to take him off the court in crunch time.

The value that Carpenter brings to this Clinton Grace team is his overall versatility. His blend of positional size, athleticism and mobility make for one of the more toolsy prospects in the DMV and that was on display last night despite the loss. Carpenter can guard four positions at the high school level effectively and on offense, he’s an instinctual cutter that usually results in layups as guards like Lyons deliver lasers. His athleticism around the rim was evident as he had two smooth reverse finishes to avoid the outstretched arms of Springdale defenders such as Duncan and 2026 Bol Thet. Carpenter is also a massive threat in the open floor as a lob-catcher and he brought the gym to a frenzy last night in a pivotal moment when he found himself on the finishing end of an alley-oop as he flushed it with two hands. Carpenter scored 12 points, hauled in six rebounds and blocked two shots on the night.

-Carpenter has really bought into and has shined in his role as a roving connector and play-finisher around in the rim in the halfcourt that takes advantage of his point guards’ creation skills. Carpenter showed that he can knock down open perimeter looks off the catch, had an emphatic putback dunk with two hands, and gives Clinton Grace some lineup versatility to play him as a small ball four when they go to smaller lineups (or tonight, when missing some of their front court depth). Once the motor is humming on all cylinders, he’s an opponent that needs to be accounted for at both ends of the floor.

Isaiah was the most consistent offensive force for Clinton Grace through the game. He was the recipient of some big time alley-oops that helped carry momentum enough for the big win at the invite. Knocked down some perimeter shots from spotting up and from creating space enough to score. Had some wiggle to his handle that I have not seen much of, showed he’s got some smooth wing abilities from an offensive standpoint. Isaiah made a couple turnaway baskets after getting by his matchup or pivoting his way to space in the midrange. Was nice to see him play such a big role in winning the game against a tough opponent.
