There isn’t a ton of flash to Veney’s game, and that’s perfectly fine. At this stage of his development, you want to see him score it in a manner that translates to a college floor, which consists of straight-line drives, minimizing dribbles to get to spots quickly before stopping on a dime to rise up and making quick decisions with the ball off the catch. Much of his scoring comes off the catch and rip or playing out of the triple-threat where he an use a lengthy first step to expose driving lanes. He’s an active mover without the ball and in transition, ran the lanes wide and with purpose.
Veney converted 20 of his 31 attempts from the field, good enough for 64.5 percent, converted 12-of-13 from the charity stripe and was good for a single three on the weekend, with only three attempts from deep.

-Our staff was early in believing in the Cadets’ leading guard, moving him into our top 10 at the start of the season as we anticipated a breakout season and were not disappointed. The only junior named to the WCAC 1st Team after an overtime duel with PVI in the championship game, Veney made strides as a leader at both ends of the floor for SJC that took full advantage of the opportunity in front of him with several key pieces graduating from the Cadets’ backcourt. Veney scored at a high level to carry his team in several marquee matchups with national teams and improved as an on-ball defender that used his positional size to guard several spots within SJC’s halfcourt schemes. His ability to create space for himself in the halfcourt off the bounce will likely be his next big area of improvement after a season of operating against opponents’ best perimeter defenders. But he seems up for the task and should build on his momentum on the AAU circuit this summer with Team Durant , as Maryland joined the growing list of scholarship offers for the junior guard.

There were long stretches of the semis and small spurts of the final that Jymin Veney took over. In the semis, Carroll really had no answer for him. In both games, he did well finishing through contact, and he had a number of really crafty finishes. He displayed great footwork and knocked down a few spot-up threes. He was a huge reason St. John’s was able to push their lead to 16 in the 2nd half, and he had a combined 41 points in the two games.

Scores the ball in a variety of ways. He can fill it up quickly once he sees one shot drop and creates separation with quick twitch/powerful moves. On his drives. He has a good feeling for when to draw defense’s attention and uses his instincts to locate open teammates for open opportunities. He is an active off ball defender with a knack for generating deflections. Jymin played a solid and control game against Bishop Ireton scoring 17 points on 5-11 from the field, 2-3 from the 3pt line, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal.

Veney was the offensive source for the Cadets as they were in full control of their matchup against St. Frances for three quarters until the Panthers stormed back. His body and frame continue to improve month-to-month, which has simultaneously made him a bigger threat off the bounce in creating space to pull-up for his mid-range jumper or get all the way to the rim and create angles in the air to finish. Veney thrived in getting downhill or posting up smaller guards where he bullied his way to the rim for finished despite contact on the way. If he wasn’t getting all the way into the paint, he’d use a jab and get to his spot around the nail for 15-footers, which he converted at an efficient clip. Veney led St. John’s in the overtime thriller with 19 points.

Having seen a couple rocky performances of Veney’s earlier in the season, it was a welcome change to see him put it all together with an impressive 23-point effort to engineer a come-from-behind win. Instead of the heavy initiation role he’d played in the past, Veney shined by using his positional size and strength to fill in gaps , routinely catching inside the paint on cuts or crashes and finishing strong through congestion. He got going with multiple self-created drives during a 16-point second half while also playing tough-nosed defense in a series of key 1-on-1 situations. When all was said and done, Veney earned game MVP honors while shooting 10-of-14 from the field while adding 4 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 steals. All that was missing was his perimeter stroke, but nonetheless Veney clearly looked the part of a potential high-major guard.

Veney has adjusted fairly well to becoming the primary scorer that the Cadets needed him to be this season. His combination of size, strength and two-way impact make him a prospect that college programs from various DI levels are keeping close tabs on. He has St. John’s (DC) currently sitting with an 11-4 overall record as the thick of WCAC play approaches. It’ll be interesting from an evaluation standpoint to see how his game prospers given the thorough scouting and preparation from conference foes, but Veney’s game and IQ should allow him to expand his game nicely with what should be a strong spring/summer ahead.

-Veney didn’t shoot the ball particularly well against a red-hot Panthers group that boasts the best perimeter defender in the country– but he didn’t let that affect his aggressive play in the marquee game of the Behan Strong event. Veney got it going with an AND1 high dribble pickup and float off the window in transition, scored on several putbacks around the rim, grabbed his own missed 3 and scored on the putback through the contact. Loved that he still earned himself several trips to the line when the perimeter jumpers or paint floaters weren’t dropping. He played a big role in the Cadets cutting the lead to 6 with just under 2 minutes left in the game.

Veney came up in a big way for St. John’s (DC) in a crucial game against Father Judge (PA) as the Cadets walked away with a commanding 65-45 win. The 6-foot-3 combo guard took home MVP honors thanks to his 19 points (7/11 FG), four rebounds, four assists and three steals as he continues to blossom into the consistent, backcourt producer for head coach Pat O’Connor.
