Expert Analysis
Eric Wallace | Prep Hoops Scout
Gray put together a very strong spring with Team Durant on the EYBL circuit, averaging 11.5 points and 2.6 assists per game while consistently producing against elite competition. A tough, physical left handed lead guard, he plays with confidence and embraces big moments. Gray is capable of creating his own offense, using his strength, handle, and above-average quickness to get downhill and generate scoring opportunities. He is a reliable shot maker who can score from the perimeter or attack the paint, making him a legitimate offensive weapon. Beyond his scoring ability, Gray is dependable with the basketball, makes sound decisions, and rarely gets rattled by defensive pressure.

-Just an absolute winner. Gray engineered a comeback against a scrappy, well-coached Iverson team by playing both ends of the floor at a high level. Gray scored twice off of post-ups on a smaller guard in front of the rim, closed distance quickly to swat a layup attempt at the rim in transition, shot the gap to avoid being screened to force deflections or steals that gave his team life in the 2H, generated paint touches to force defenses to collapse, and hit a huge double crossover deep 3 for game. Our scouts always come impressed with how hard and how aggressive he plays on a nightly basis surrounded by 4 and 5-star talent as the engine for Durant’s 17u group.

One of the most productive guards I saw all day and it comes to no surprise as Gray has prided himself throughout his high school career as a tough-nosed, stat-stuffing backcourt presence who is adaptable in different systems. No matter the style, he’s going to bring a relentless on-ball pressure defensively that refuses to go away. On several occasions, he met his man at the halfcourt line and never too a retreat step. Instead, he holds his ground with a low center of gravity and active hands that have cat-like quickness, which resulted in multiple steals or deflections and him finishing the job at the other end. He ran the show for Durant 17s as Jamaal McKnight Jr. was out and things functioned fluidly. The value with Gray is that he’ll be able to shift off the ball as well while maintaining his workmanlike approach and dial in to his long-range shooting off the catch with underrated precision. It’s very rare that Gray has an unproductive outing whenever he takes the floor and Saturday was another day of work for the southpaw guard.

Gray is a tough, scoring lefty lead guard who can create his own offense off the dribble and consistently put pressure on the defense. He is a reliable shot maker with range, pairs that with above-average quickness, and plays under control with the basketball. Gray also brings value on the defensive end as a willing, competitive on-ball defender.

Gray is a physical, hard-nosed lead guard who brings strength and toughness to the backcourt. He has the ability to control the game as both a scorer and a distributor, balancing aggression with poise when running the offense. The left-hander excels at getting downhill, finishing through contact in the lane, and using his body to create angles against bigger defenders.
He is comfortable creating his own shot off the dribble and has developed into a capable perimeter shooter who keeps defenses honest. Beyond his scoring, Gray shows the vision and decision-making ability to facilitate and make the right reads in traffic. With his blend of physicality, skill, and positional versatility, he projects as a heavily recruited prospect in the 2027 class heading into the spring and summer evaluation periods.

Similar in style to Toatley, Gray is a tough, strong lead guard who can impact the game as both a scorer and a distributor. The left-hander finishes well through contact in the lane, creates his own offense off the dribble, and is a capable perimeter shot-maker. With his physicality and backcourt versatility, Gray projects as a heavily recruited member of the 2027 class this spring and summer.

It tends to be a long day at the office for whichever guard Gray is matched up with, and there were clearly no exceptions made in Salisbury as the rugged southpaw put together a pair of dynamic two-way efforts. A transfer from Calvin Coolidge (DC), Gray never stopped applying pressure on either end of the floor. He attacked relentlessly off the bounce, whether initiating offense or spacing out to the wing, working aggressively to his spots downhill and showing he could keep things honest from the perimeter on his way to over 15 points per game. As usual, Gray was a bloodhound on the other end, pestering opposing ballhandlers from the second they stepped on the floor, highlighted by a whopping nine steals in a Tuesday evening win over St. Benedict’s (NJ). Gray’s two-way impact is matched by very few guards in the region and should see him draw a long line of D1 suitors heading into the spring and summer.

Gray remains one of the more undervalued guard in the DMV 2027 class and there’s a real argument that he belongs in the highest tier of impact backcourt defenders. His relentless pursuit of the ball combined with his lateral quickness, active hands and ability to initiate contact without fouling to make opposing ball-handlers all go into what makes him a plus defender despite his size. That same mindset translates to the offensive side as he looks to expose any slight driving lane that presents itself and can slip his way to the rim for finishes through contact. Gray did a nice job in transition of reading the situation and if needed, would stop on a dime for a pull-up with nice balance. The combo guard averaged 15.5 points, 6.5 steals and 2.5 assists as Bethel finished 1-1.

Playing alongside this teammate and fellow point guard Toatley, Gray was equally impressive against So Cal Academy. The junior had 4 assists and 2 steals to go along with 15 points and used his quickness to affect the game at both ends of the floor. Gray is poised to be one of the top recruited point guards in the state’s 2027 class.

is a 6-foot-1 prospect in the Class of 2027. He continues to highlight a strong understanding of how to make an impact with or without the ball in his hands. Makiah is a smart, scrappy, high-motor guard with an unselfish approach to the game. He’s a capable perimeter shooter who can attack closeouts and make the extra pass as needed. Staley does a nice job of filling in the gaps offensively. He’s also a pesky defender who forces turnovers and contains his assignment well.
