Expert Analysis
Tom Keller | Prep Hoops Scout
Colston is a physical in-between guard who has nice positional size. He collected a few steals and turned it into offensive possessions for his team. He is effective turning the corner in the half-court and getting to the rim. Colston found his teammates with his passing and has no issues making plays for others.

Gabe showed toughness and confidence as a scorer, bouncing back from a slow start to make a major impact late in the game I caught from him. He stayed composed, took quality shots, and found his rhythm in the second half thanks to his efficiency. Gabe attacked the basket with purpose and looked for opportunities to get himself going. His confidence never wavered, and it paid off in the biggest moment as he knocked down the game-winning three in overtime to secure a 4A MPSSAA Regional Championship for JFK.

The Montgomery County Player of the Year leaps into the top-50 after a spectacular individual season where he played hero in the regional title game against Richard Montgomery as he buried the game-winning three. The lead guard averaged and impressive 25 points, seven rebounds and three steals per contest as he looks to build on the momentum further with TTO National this spring and summer. Colston is capable of putting up a crooked number in the scoring column whenever he steps on the floor and that’ll remain the theme as he steps into a senior leadership role for Kennedy next winter. Colston made the jump from No. 87 to No. 47.

-The reigning POY didn’t contribute to his normal level as a scorer for the Cavaliers but found other ways to impact the game to lead to the eventual win. Colston used a strong frame and sharp positioning instincts to serve as a timely rebounder that came up with some tough boards in traffic just because he kept playing through the whistle. Loved his impact defensively as an effective shot-blocker both on and off the ball who uses an explosive leaping ability to recover or rotate well to block shots around the rim. Colston came to life offensively in the 2H by hitting the high pickup euro step floater in traffic, bullying his way to the FT line (often by crashing into multiple opponents to snag offensive rebounds), and hitting an and-1 game-winning 3 just before the ?s=20" rel="nofollow">buzzer. Since eliminated, Colston should make a name for himself this spring on the AAU circuit as a hidden gem that will definitely be a riser in our next rankings update.

Gabe has shown three-level scoring ability all year and has remained reliable for Kennedy every night. He plays patient but stays aggressive, which allows him to keep teammates involved without disappearing as a scorer. He’s had big-time games for John F. Kennedy and he’s been level, averaging around 19 points and 5 rebounds per game. Gabe’s game isn’t built on forcing wild shots. Uses his handle and big-guard stature to get to his spots on the floor. What also stands out is his steady two-way presence, impacting more than one part of the game. He has the mindset of a lead option while still being connected to winning basketball. Gabe has been one of the safer bets all season and his stock will only continue to rise heading into his senior year.

Has a solid handle featuring crossovers, quick burst and ability to stop on a dime and show in and outs, between the legs. Bury the pullup consistently throughout the summer. Keeps defenders off balance with abrupt starts and stops, change of direction. A strong, quick playmaker hits the pullup at a good rate, blow by burst. Scrappy defender. Averaged over 23 points a game in the Capitol Hoops Summer League.

Another squad who manufactured a perfect showing in York was JFK. They were led by Colston, who seemingly had a hand in every positive play that took place for his team. He could get his shot from anywhere on the floor whenever the situation called for it, he made those around him better after the opposing defenses made adjustments in hopes of containing his scoring, and he was a menace in the passing lanes defensively creating deflections with regularity. In fitting fashion, Colston would cap off his stay at The Challenge with a 33-point outing, which would be the most scored by a single player on the weekend.

Gabe has been buzzing all summer with his consistent output as the No. 1 option for John. F. Kennedy. He impressed our scout team yet again with his potent scoring ability. Gabe got to the line with consistency when he decided to attack the basket, and converted more times then not. Made the defense pay going under ball screens with his effectiveness pulling up for 3 off the dribble. Gabe really has transformed his offensive game into a versatile and complete game. His defense was impressive as well, scouting the passing lanes with precision and grabbing steals through each game. I expect to see a 1st-Team type of season from the underrated combo guard.

Gabe put together a very productive summer that help put his name on the map. One of the top scorers over Capitol Hoops SL, averaging 23 points and achieving All-Star honors. Gabe had a couple of seasons to gain experience and confidence, and now has started to unleash his offensive firepower. Shot the ball very well from deep over the summer, shooting over 50% from the 3pt line and the field alike. He mixed it up with his scoring diversity, getting tough baskets underneath while shooting the ball with great touch outside. As a point guard Gabe has learned how to read the floor, so as a scorer he has started identifying ways to be a bigger threat to attack and create. I expect Gabe to continue rising his stock following this breakout summer.

keeps putting in terrific performances for JFK. Gabe is a complete scorer with nice size at the point guard position. Gabe is an outstanding three-point shooter and has great vision. He does a great job on the glass and does well defensively. Gabe has scored below 20 points only once in 7 games this summer league, and he’s third in scoring right now. In a blowout win over Oxon Hill, Gabe had 24 points. 10 rebounds and 6 assists. He also came away with 7 steals.
