Chance McCoy

McCoy stepped into a situation at St. Frances and was expected to fill a vital, yet fluid role within the rotation from day one. The tough-nosed Edmonson transfer brought his defensive grit from playing in the city public league to the Panthers and it was welcomed with open arms as was his ability to get downhill, play up-tempo and finish through contact at the rim. He progressed throughout the season as a catch-and-shoot threat and while the shot still isn’t at a point where his defender has to run him off the line, the improvement since November is noteworthy. What I liked about McCoy was whether he was starting or brought off the bench, his energy remained the same. The Panthers’ lineups changed quite a bit depending on the matchup, but knowing that McCoy was going to come in and infuse energy into the game on both ends helped him make his mark in the BCL/MIAA as well as jump 10 spots to No. 90 in our latest update.

-Playing in a loaded rotation of SFA guards, McCoy really stood out as a knockdown shooter and good decision-maker in transition. Thought McCoy understood when to fill the wing to space the floor in transition and when to time his lifts from the wing to the top of the key in sync with his teammates drive’s on the opposite side of the floor in the secondary break. McCoy does a good job of scanning the floor in his pre-catch reads to make quick decisions once he catches the ball on the wing, either to take advantage of a slow closeout with a 3-ball or slice towards the defense to score at the rim or at least force the defense to shift. SFA will need another balanced performance out of him and the rest of the backcourt in a semifinal matchup against a Spalding team that also scored 74 points in the first round.

showing up late due to a family emergency and the 6-foot-3 southpaw had a positive impact on the game right away with his rough and rugged slashing ability. His seven first half points were key as St. Frances needed all the offensive help they could find against the proven Mount Carmel defense. McCoy chimed in with his usual defensive activity as he mucks things up on the ball while closing down the glass as he walked away from this one with nine points and five rebounds.

The top-ranked Panthers won by a convincing 15-point margin over St. Vincent Pallotti and the transfer junior guard led the scoring column with 17 points. A tough-nosed, southpaw guard who thrives in transition or getting downhill where he can initiate and finish through contact, McCoy has steadily improved his balance and fluidity within his catch-and-shoot mechanics to make him a much tougher assignment for opposing teams. His lateral quickness paired with active hands make him a stout defender who can hover 1-3 positions at this level.

McCoy was my choice for St. Frances’ x-factor the day prior to this contest and he made me look smart with his fourth quarter explosion to create the separation that the scoreboard indicated. 11 of his 16 points came in the final frame and within a few minute span, he knocked down multiple triples to completely shift the momentum in the Panthers’ favor. Known for his ability to expose driving lanes with a quick first step met by a physical frame to throw around, McCoy’s outside shooting has flashed in spurts throughout his first season with the group on Chase Street. It’s runs like this that he’s capable of making that can turn this team from a contender to a league favorite.

. McCoy is the new face to the roster by way of Edmondson-Westside and has brought the valuable gritty, up-tempo style of play that only adds to the arsenal of weapons for head coach Nick Myles. His strong-built 6-foot-3 frame has surfaced with tough on-ball defense, his finishing through contact on straight-line drives or getting in the mix for rebounds. McCoy’s outside shooting remains streaky, but posing as a slashing threat on the catch allows for some clean looks and with his feet set, he’s shown confidence in converting from the corners to help swing momentum of games. The production between Fisk and Jones has become a given, but when McCoy is adding in his fingerprints to a game, upending the 23-4 overall Panthers is a tough task.

McCoy is another role player on this St. Frances team who has leaned into his niche and is reaping the rewards. A well-built, 6-foot-3 southpaw guard, McCoy brings his up-tempo approach along with scrappy physicality from his days playing in the Baltimore City Public school scene. Things are starting to slow down a bit for McCoy as he’s beginning to understand the game on a higher level and how to pick and choose his spots to impact the game. He’s a tenacious defender both on or off the ball as he darts in passing lanes for steals and quickly gets to the opposing rim to tally points off turnovers. His jumper continues to trend in the right direction when he’s playing off Fisk or Jones’ paint touches as he has hit a few in the last couple of games from the corner. His presence on the glass and ability to play off the ball will be pivotal come playoff time.

McCoy makes his debut in the rankings and for a St. Frances team this season that will need his gritty, active approach on both ends of the floor. The combo guard spent his first two years at Edmondson-Westside where that toughness was embraced as the key ingredient to their championship culture. McCoy will now look to make an impact in the Catholic League and polish aspects of his game such as pace, decision-making and his shooting. He’s a quick-twitch guard who can get to the rim in a flash whenever a driving lane presents itself and if he focuses on playing to his strengths and priding himself as the dirty work guard, it’ll do wonders for both the Panthers and his individual stock.

-McCoy turned in the most well-rounded performance of the day for the Panthers as a dynamic guard that can play both on and off the ball. McCoy started things off with a beautiful drive n kick to a shooter, threw a baseline skip to corner shooter a few possessions later, collected a steal off the ball and laid it up at the other end, and hit a perfect finger roll off the window as he floated past his defender in midair. McCoy is a guard made in Coach Myles’ image as an active piranha of a defender on the ball that switches ends quickly as soon as he turns his matchup over in the halfcourt. Should make a name for himself as a consistent contributor in the SFA guard rotation.

-The newest arrival on Chase St showed his value as an open court speed demon that can play both on and off the ball. McCoy is quite fast with the ball in his hands and only needs the smallest opening to slice his way to the rim. Love the way that he didn’t settle for perimeter shots and spent most of the afternoon probing the defense to create easy looks for his team. Should fill in the gaps for the departing Lawson/Cannady transfers quite nicely in the backcourt.
