Heading into the high school season, I would like to highlight some players that I think are underrated or under recruited by colleges. These players are, in my opinion, either being overlooked by colleges at the level they could play for, or don't have enough schools at that level that are aware of the impact they could bring. Here's a look at seven wings in the RVA area that need more love from college coaches.

[player_tooltip player_id='2459364' first='Ryan' last='Flippo'] | 6'6” SF | Benedictine

Flippo has been a standout at Benedictine for the last few years, and with his blend of size and skill it makes no sense why he doesn't have higher level programs interested in him. At 6'6” with long arms and good athleticism he's able to rebound and finish in traffic among post players, he is a knock down shooter from deep with good range and he doesn't need much space to get his shot off, and he plays with a great motor and has shown he'll leave it all on the floor for his team.

Arrie McWiliams | 6'2” SG | Hanover

McWilliams has been the go-to staple for Hanover over the last few years, emerging as one of the areas top shooters and filling it up with the best of them, showing he could make an impact with his mix of shooting and a great work ethic as well. The 6'2” off guard has a strong build and has shown he isn't afraid to get physical on the defensive end, he shoots it well over 40% from deep and is capable of working off the ball and getting his feet set to make shots on the move, and he's very good at getting downhill and drawing contact to get to the line.

[player_tooltip player_id='2459370' first='Kevin' last='Mayo'] | 6'3” SG | Henrico

Mayo had a very good junior season and followed it up with a big summer with [program_tooltip program_id='2248971' first='River' last='City Reign'], and he's a guy more coaches should get involved with because as he's sprout up over the past few years he's turned into a lights out scorer both on and off the ball. The 6'3” shooting guard can work off the ball and makes good reads coming off screens to curl or fade and can hit shots on the move, he can isolate and work out of ball screens with the ability to create space and make tough shots, and he can get downhill and is able to finish with both hands or draw contact and get to the line.

[player_tooltip player_id='1782689' first='Faron' last='Friend'] | 6'5” SG | Glen Allen

Friend has been putting on a scoring clinic since the day he stepped foot on the floor at Glen Allen, and while his numbers have been impressive he still seems to be slept on by scholarship level coaches who are unaware of how much of a mismatch he is as a scorer. He can work on the ball where he can get to his pull-up both from deep and from the midrange, he can get downhill and use his size to finish in traffic, he can work off the ball and is a good catch and shoot and cutter, and he can use his size defensively to challenge shots and rebound too.

[player_tooltip player_id='2459361' first='Caleb' last='Straughter'] | 6'7” SF | Varina

Straughter is a player we've been watching closely over the past two years, as we saw him develop from a lanky 6'4” wing who was a good catch-and-shoot guy, to a 6'7” wing who is a walking mismatch on both ends of the floor and could make a major impact for a program over the next four years. He runs the floor like a gazelle and has gotten very bouncy both getting downhill off of one and off of two off the catch, he has improved in his ability to work in isolation in the half court, he can drill it from deep off the catch, and he has all the tools to be a lock down defender as he continues to fill out moving forward.

[player_tooltip player_id='2803871' first='Xavian' last='Bagley'] | 6'5” SF | Banner Christian

Bagley was instrumental in Banner Christian's run to the VISAA D-IV state semifinal last season, and his versatility and skillset for his size is something that could really help a program moving forward. The 6'5” wing is a player who could come into the right program with the ability to play multiple positions and fit in multiple schemes, his length and athleticism will translate on the defensive end and when he gets out in transition, and he's capable of scoring the ball from all three levels both on and off the ball too.

[player_tooltip player_id='2618824' first='King' last='Williams'] | 6'1” SG | LC Bird

Williams has been a staple for a very successful LC Bird program over the past two seasons, and there's not doubt that coming from a winning program will translate to the next level with the habits and understanding of the game he's developed over the years. While he's slightly undersized at his position he brings toughness on both ends of the floor coming from a program that won't allow you to be soft, he shoots the ball confidently and efficiently from deep, and he can play on and off the ball and makes good decisions too.
