Expert Analysis
Eric Wallace | Prep Hoops Scout
The Florida State commit has established himself as a dominant presence in the paint for Gillion Academy, anchoring the interior on both ends of the floor. Ponder brings good strength and physicality to the lane, consistently carving out space and finishing with authority around the rim. He moves well for his size, runs the floor effectively in transition, and plays through contact, making him a reliable interior scoring option.
Defensively, he is a force in the paint, using his frame and mobility to contest shots, control the glass, and protect the rim. As his offensive skill set continues to expand — particularly with touch, footwork, and overall feel — and as his understanding of spacing and pace improves, Ponder has the tools to develop into an impact freshman in the ACC.

The Florida State signee moves well for his size and and is a force in the lane at both ends of the floor. Continued offensive development and improved understanding of the game will give Ponder a chance to be an impact freshman for new Head Coach Luke Loucks in Tallahassee.

It was yet another dominant showing from the future Florida State Seminole big man as he asserted himself as the most fearful paint presence in high school basketball. His combination of size at 6’11”-7’0″ and strength is in a class of his its own. The physicality and quickness that you see out of human the size of Ponder is usually only witnessed on the defensive line of an NFL team and that only applies to the strength and weight portion. Ponder posted an outrageous triple-double of 17 points, 18 rebounds, and 15 blocks (!!) in a win over West Oaks (FL). In one of the most anticipated matchups of the early HS season, Gillion fell to No. 1 ranked Prolific Prep by a final score of 75-60 on Saturday, but Ponder left his fingerprints all over the effort to a tune of 18 points, 16 rebounds, and eight blocks.

14p 8r 1s 5b vs Blue Ridge
-Ponder has worked hard on his body and that work is paying dividends as he is remaining in games for longer stretches of time to serve as an effective post presence for his team. The improved conditioning was needed because his motor is always running hot at both ends of the floor and you could tell that he had a hard time pacing himself because of his competitive edge. The 5 blocks were the most I’ve seen from him as he protected the rim both on and off the ball and he was finishing plays in traffic through the contact. Has a chance at All-MET as he will likely be one of the best bigs in the area this season.

13p 14r 3b vs DeMatha
-Ponder is an absolute monster of a physical specimen out on the basketball court. The physical big performed very well against a DeMatha frontcourt that has gotten the best out of most of their opponents this summer. Loved the timing, anticipation, and athleticism displayed on several blocks that he raced back in transition to collect. He takes pride in the defensive end of the floor and is learning how to use his physicality to bump drivers and rebounders off their spot without fouling. He is a magnet for rebounds on the offensive glass and has improved his footwork around the basket to pivot for better angles at the rim whether he’s finishing with a 2-handed flush or laying it up with either hand off the glass. If his skill level can continue to increase the range on his touch around the basket, he should develop into an even more formidable center prospect. Loved the intangibles of competitiveness and communication whether he was on the floor or cheering from the sideline– you can tell that he cares about winning and will give his team everything he’s got to come away with the W.

Not many guys with his size (7ft, nearly 300 pound frame) move the way he does on the basketball court at any level. He carves out space with ease and does a solid job of playing straight up while making the defense attempt to finish over the top of him. Offensively he’s evolving but at this moment he’s at best when trying to tear the rim off whether in space or traffic. Recently offered by Tennessee and Sacramento State.

Ponder is a classic interior force at 7-0 with a soft touch around the rim. His size alone makes him a problem in the paint, but it’s his high motor and physicality that set him apart. As he continues to refine his post game and rim protection, his upside heading into his senior year is massive.

The 6-11 power forward is a coveted and traditional big man where he has a soft touch at the front of the rim. Ponder also plays with a high motor and has an imposing figure to have huge upside as he gears up for his sophomore season. Ponder has already held notable offers from Alabama, Illinois, UCF and several others so far this summer. He will be playing with Overtime Elite this upcoming season where his offer list will continue to grow.
