In its 31st year at the Breslin Center. The MHSAA State Championship weekend produced something completely new. A “truly” hometown champion as East Lansing took the trophy a mere 2.5 miles back to its home campus. I'll wrap up regular season coverage with all tournament teams.

PG- [player_tooltip player_id='1793650' first='Carlos' last='Medlock Jr'] 5-10 2026 Wayne Memorial (pictured) Simply put, might have had the singular performance of the weekend in Friday's semifinal. Put on an absolute show in the Zebra's win over a Flint Carman Ainsworth. Did it all from the point guard spot. I'll post the stat line at the end. However keep in mind those numbers essentially came in three quarters. Not because he was subbed out in a lopsided game. Because he barely touched the basketball early. Got the ultimate sign of respect with total denial defense from the jump. You don't see that often. Mainly because it's hard to sustain for four quarters. When it subsided, Medlock went to work. Easily slicing through the defense to get open looks and accumulate assists. Has a knack for stopping on a dime and rising in the mid range. Uniquely can fade and fall in the air to shoot from unusual angles. This combined with speed and next level court awareness help make up for the lack of ideal height. Struggled a little in final with how East Lansing protected the rim. Saturday was a magnus opus though. Put up 29 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Making a pretty early case to be a Mr Basketball candidate next year.

SG- [player_tooltip player_id='1806404' first='KJ' last='Torbert'] 6-3 2026 East Lansing When you win a Division I state championship you could essentially put the whole team on. After placing three Trojans on the 1st and 2nd teams, simply couldn't leave out Torbert. Really shined on Friday afternoon. Especially late. Played excellent defense on a McDonald's All American (see below) Then came alive offensively in the clutch. Has one of the more devastating Euro steps in transition you will see. Extreme bounce and plays easily above the rim. Scored 19 and 16 points respectively on the weekend. East Lansing will lose quite a bit. However if 2027 [player_tooltip player_id='2140508' first='Kingston' last='Thomas'] and Torbert continue to play like they did this weekend. The Trojans could be making the short trip back to the Breslin Center once again next year.

SF- [player_tooltip player_id='1437536' first='Trey' last='McKenney'] 6-4 2025 Orchard Lake St Mary's Didn't have his best day, but still put together of series of shots and finishes that only he could pull off. Was aggressive early. Had the gym buzzing with an acrobatic tip in. The footwork and fundamentals are so advanced. Sometimes you forget how good of an athlete he is. That play definitely served as reminder. Didn't shrink from the moment late. Hit a clutch late three to keep St Mary's in it. One of my favorite players to cover over the last decade. Mr Basketball went out with no bullets left in his holster. Wrapping up a stellar career with a 21 point outing.

PF- [player_tooltip player_id='2218000' first='Chance' last='Houser'] 6-6 2026 Romulus Summit Academy North The Dragons have an army of guards that essentially slowed down Kingsford's dynamic backcourt. All year I wondered if they had the size to make a deep run. Houser shut down those concerns in a major way. Was huge on both ends of the court. Has excellent lateral quickness on an athletic frame. Also plays easily above the rim. Finished with 21 points and seven rebounds. Could really move up recruiting boards with a big spring and summer.

C- [player_tooltip player_id='2725432' first='Austin' last='Tory'] 6-7 2025 Wayne Memorial Like Summit North, I wondered if the Zebras had the frontline to make a deep run. The answer to that question was “hiding“ in plain sight. I use the quotes intentionally, as Tory has long been a contributor on this team. However a late growth spurt has moved him from the guard position to a legitimate— albeit unique post prospect. Is still quite skinny and understandably lanky. He appears comfortable with his size though. Has good natural timing on defense and lobs. Finished off a few looks from Medlock emphatically. Finished with 14 points six rebounds against some stout front court competition (see below) They were a “loud” and crucial 14. I don't normally advocate for players running in AAU after graduation. That could benefit a late blooming prospect like Tory.

PG- [player_tooltip player_id='2630702' first='Lewis' last='Lovejoy'] 5-9 2028 Arts & Technology Academy of Pontiac What an inaugural season for the Detroit area point guard. Lovejoy isn't vey big, but that's about all you can ding him for. It was impressive how he was able to get his shot off against Gabriel Richard's much bigger backcourt. Did it with one the quickest releases you will see. It's obviously an intentional aspect of his game. Especially evident at the foul line. Get the ball up right after the official threw it to him. I've never really seen that. In fact, a freshman leading a state championship is rather rare in and of itself. Finished with a game high 21 points in the final. That's impressive to say the least. However the diminutive point guard also someone hauled in eight rebounds against a big Richard frontline that had two players post double doubles. This speaks to Lovejoy's athleticism, tenacity, and long term upside.

SG- [player_tooltip player_id='2360472' first='Jordan' last='McCoy'] 6-2 2026 Grand Rapids Catholic Central I won't over complicate this. I haven't seen too many players slow down [player_tooltip player_id='1437547' first='Moses' last='Blackwell'] over the last four years. McCoy's size and speed combo had his diminutive point guard hunting switches. Holding Blackwell to three points on the night. Offensively McCoy was the fastest player with the ball in his hands on the weekend. This is no small feat. Finished with eight points and probably could have looked for his shot a little more. Will be one of the top point guards in the Grand Rapids area, if not the entire state next year.

SF- Drew Everingham 6-5 2025 Riverview Gabriel Richard The Pioneers have long featured a strong backcourt and intimidating frontline. Everingham gave then an added element in his senior campaign. That element is explosiveness at the rim. The long and lanky lefty lived above rim. Punctuating the win with multiple dunks. Has a very unique shot from the perimeter, but it was effective. Good ball handler for his size and played his role well. The Western Michigan baseball commit finished up his hardwood career with an eye opening double double. Putting up 16 points and 11 rebounds in the final.

PF- [player_tooltip player_id='2218017' first='Jack' last='Bowen'] 6-6 2025 Grand Rapids Catholic Central For seemingly the last half decade. Catholic Central has featured a dynamic backcourt and a developing and small frontline. Now a senior, Bowen has fulfilled the potential and promise he showed earlier in his career. Not surprisingly this resulted in a Breslin appearance for the Cougars. Bowen took advantage of Warren Lincoln's small front court at times on Friday night. The lefty showed a soft touch around the basket. Along with more aggressiveness than I seen in prior viewings. He has always been light and quick on his feet. Finished off a nice career with eight points and eight rebounds.

C- [player_tooltip player_id='1439355' first='Donovan' last='Hamlin'] 6-5 2025 Flint Carman Ainsworth I highlighted how well Wayne Memorial's frontline played above. That did not stop Hamlin from putting together a solid outing. This was largely due to his next level speed and strength. Simply willed his way to a big game. Finished up a banner March run with a 15 point and eight rebound performance. He's going to play something at the next level. Be it football or basketball, the near elite level athleticism is too difficult to ignore.
