Some observations from the 19th annual Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout, which included 27 games played over three days at the Buuck Fieldhouse on the campus of Concordia University in Mequon:

THE STARTING FIVE

Best Individual Performance
Iowa State recruit [player_tooltip player_id='1282617' first='Xzavion' last='Mitchell'] of Oshkosh North put up 44 points in the Spartans' 71-64 win over Arrowhead. He made 13 two-point shots, four three-point baskets and went six-of-seven from the foul line. His ability to make shots off the dribble, off the catch, off the glass, in the open court and from the foul stripe make him an extremely difficult player to slow. Mitchell glides to the basket off the bounce like a gazelle and uses the backboard well when finishing off his plays. His scoring has been remarkable thus far for an otherwise young Oshkosh North squad as he is averaging 36.8 points while playing against some top-flight competition. Mitchell, who recently surpassed 2,000 career points, also contributes 8.0 rpg, 2.8 apg and 2.6 spg while shooting 55 percent from the field and 87 percent from the foul line.

Best Game
The Nicolet victory over West Allis Central was a great game, but the De Pere triumph over Milwaukee Academy of Science was one of the best in the history of the WBY Shootout. More than 450 games have been played since the event started in 2005, and the De Pere vs. Academy of Science game ranks among the top five. A soldout crowd at the Buuck Fieldhouse witnessed a game that featured two of the state's top teams and several of its premier individual players. The teams and players didn't disappoint as both teams competed with tremendous energy and an intense desire to win. When the dust cleared, De Pere emerged with a 75-73 triumph in overtime. University of Wisconsin recruit [player_tooltip player_id='1351717' first='Zach' last='Kinziger'] was outstanding as he scored 35 points for De Pere. He got plenty of help from his teammates as Northern Michigan recruit [player_tooltip player_id='1908410' first='Pryce' last='Gregoire'] contributed 16 and Eau Claire recruit [player_tooltip player_id='1428204' first='Roan' last='Demovsky'] added 13. For Academy of Science, Iowa State recruit [player_tooltip player_id='1447228' first='Jamarion' last='Batemon'] had 25 points, senior [player_tooltip player_id='1481181' first='Amare' last='Jackson'] added 15 and junior [player_tooltip player_id='1501903' first='Deuce' last='Burkes'] added 16. The game was deadlocked at 73 in the extra session when Demovsky was fouled. He made the first foul shot, but his second shot was off the mark. The ball was batted around a bit and went out of bounds to De Pere. Kinziger then was fouled again split two foul shots to give De Pere its 75-73 lead. Academy of Science raced the ball down the floor and called a timeout with :02.2 remaining. Burkes had a decent look from three to win the game, but his shot hit the back of the rim and De Pere succeeded in handing the Novas their first loss of the season after eight straight wins.

Best Comeback
For the second season in a row, this award goes to Saint Thomas More. A year ago, the Cavaliers rallied from a huge halftime deficit against Wisconsin Lutheran only to wind up coming up a bit short. The exact same thing happened on Friday evening when Catholic Memorial took a 39-20 lead on a dunk by senior [player_tooltip player_id='1874976' first='Jake' last='Berkholtz'] early in the second half. After a timeout that included some rather spirited imploring from STM coach Tony Mane, the Cavaliers came out with fire in their collective eyes and began to chip away at their deficit. A quick 9-0 run make it 39-29 with 11:27 left. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1544732' first='Kenari' last='Parr'] and junior [player_tooltip player_id='2500051' first='Omar' last='Fofana'], the most experienced players back from last year's 29-1 WIAA Division 3 state-championship squad, then made big plays for the Cavaliers and their strong play made it 44-41 at the 7:41 mark. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='2855866' first='Jack' last='Hennessy'] then tied the game at 44 with a three for STM, but Catholic Memorial responded with consecutive three-point plays from Berkholtz and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2505474' first='Dusty' last='Roach']. The Crusaders then held off STM down the stretch to notch a 58-50 victory.

Best Dunk
[player_tooltip player_id='2493683' first='Eric' last='Britton'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2968954' first='Gavin' last='Weissenburger'] of Living Word Lutheran put on a show with their dunking abilities in the Timberwolves' 80-63 win over Milwaukee Reagan. Britton, in particular, was impressive with his one-handed tomahawk dunk on a breakaway. Sheboygan North senior [player_tooltip player_id='2272014' first='Logan' last='Steffensmeier'] also had some nice dunks for the Golden Raiders. But the best dunk away goes to Nicolet sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2385685' first='Ja'Meir' last='Hayfort'], an emerging 6-foot-6 forward who drove the lane and delivered an enormous dunk over several West Allis Central defenders in the Knights' 85-80 victory. Hayfort was actually called for a technical for excessive celebrating after the play, but the dunk had a large crowd at Concordia roaring with approval.

Best Defensive Performance
A month ago, Slinger gave up 70 points in a 70-55 loss at Freedom to open the season. The Owls got their revenge with Freedom at the WBY Shootout. Playing inspired defense from the get go, Slinger held the Irish to just 22 first-half points in taking a 35-22 lead into the locker room. The strong defense of the Owls continued throughout the second half as coach Alex Lavine's squad used its stellar defensive performance to record a 71-49 victory and in the process hand Freedom its first loss the season after eight consecutive wins. Freedom came into the contest averaging 82.1 ppg.

STAT-SHEET STUFFERS

Scoring Leader
In addition to the 44 points [player_tooltip player_id='1282617' first='Xzavion' last='Mitchell'] scored for Oshkosh North in its win over Arrowhead, Mitchell also tossed in 33 points in the Spartans' 83-59 loss to West Allis Central. In his two games at the WBY Shootout, Mitchell averaged 38.5 points per game.

Rebounding Leader
[player_tooltip player_id='1289076' first='Eli' last='Lindsey'] is far from a dominating big man in the post. But the 6-foot-5 senior forward from Mineral Point proved to be the best rebounder among all teams that played two games at the WBY Shootout. Making one huge play after another in the Pointers' impressive 66-60 win over Dominican, Lindsey finished the hard-fought game with 35 points and 14 rebounds. He also recorded nine rebounds in a low-scoring win over Edgerton. On the season, Lindsey is averaging 7.8 rpg for the defending WIAA Division 4 state champions.

Assists Leader
Most people think 'good perimeter shooter' when discussing junior [player_tooltip player_id='1561874' first='Nathan' last='Ramus'] of Appleton North. You can now add, 'good court vision and passing skill' when taking about the gifted 6-foot-2 combination guard from one of the best teams in the Fox Valley Association. Ramus had eight assists in a 78-63 win over Brookfield Central and then added seven in a 70-59 win over Eau Claire Memorial. Ramus is averaging 7.0 apg to go along with 10.0 ppg and 5.3 rpg for the 5-2 Lightning.

SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

Congratulations to the following nine senior student-athletes who were awarded scholarships from the Majerus Family Foundation at the 19th annual Rick Majerus WBY Shootout:Jackson Tupta, Milwaukee Reagan
Jonathan Orth, The Prairie School
William Grellinger, Marquette
[player_tooltip player_id='2388798' first='Adam' last='Guyette'], Notre Dame
Caden Graff, Kaukauna
Isaac Berken, Appleton North
[player_tooltip player_id='2400106' first='Connor' last='Hutjens'], De Pere
Augie McGuinnes, Saint Thomas More
Caden Meyer, Greendale

The Majerus Family Foundation has awarded 80 scholarships totaling $400,000 over the years at the WBY Shootout.

Majerus Family Foundation MVP Plaques

The Majerus Family Foundation purchased Most Valuable Player plaques for each of the 27 games played at the WBY Shootout. Some observations from the 19th annual Rick Majerus Wisconsin Basketball Yearbook Shootout, which included 27 games played over three days at the Buuck Fieldhouse on the campus of Concordia University in Mequon:

THE STARTING FIVE

Best Individual Performance

Iowa State recruit Xzavion Mitchell Xzavion Mitchell Xzavion Mitchell 6'7" | SF Oshkosh North | 2025 State #119 Nation WI of Oshkosh North put up 44 points in the Spartans' 71-64 win over Arrowhead. Best Game
The Nicolet victory over West Allis Central was a great game, but the De Pere triumph over Milwaukee Academy of Science was one of the best in the history of the WBY Shootout. Senior Kenari Parr Kenari Parr 6'2" | SG/SF St. Thomas More | 2025 State WI and junior Omar Fofana Omar Fofana Omar Fofana 6'1" | CG Saint Thomas More | 2026 State WI , the most experienced players back from last year's 29-1 WIAA Division 3 state-championship squad, then made big plays for the Cavaliers and their strong play made it 44-41 at the 7:41 mark. Senior Jack Hennessy Jack Hennessy 6'2" | SG Saint Thomas More | 2025 WI then tied the game at 44 with a three for STM, but Catholic Memorial responded with consecutive three-point plays from Berkholtz and sophomore Dusty Roach Dusty Roach Dusty Roach 6'3" | CG Catholic Memorial | 2027 State WI . The Crusaders then held off STM down the stretch to notch a 58-50 victory.

Sheboygan North senior Logan Steffensmeier Logan Steffensmeier Logan Steffensmeier 6'7" | SF Sheboygan North | 2025 State WI also had some nice dunks for the Golden Raiders. But the best dunk away goes to Nicolet sophomore Ja’Meir Hayfort Ja’Meir Hayfort Ja’Meir Hayfort 6'7" | SF Nicolet | 2027 WI , an emerging 6-foot-6 forward who drove the lane and delivered an enormous dunk over several West Allis Central defenders in the Knights' 85-80 victory.
