There were a handful of prime-time matchups with ranked players and teams going head to head, three of which required overtime to decide. Below we break down some of the top performers from the opening matchups.
Nik Khamenia Nik Khamenia 6'7" | SF Harvard-Westlake | 2025 State #18 Nation CA-S | 2025 | Harvard-Westlake
The youngest member of one of the best “Big Three” trios in the state was as solid as ever in the Wolverines win over La Mirada. Khamenia, a skilled 6-foot-8 wing, scored 21 efficient points, created for teammates in some point-forward type situations and, as he usually does, made all the right decisions on both ends of the floor.
Robert Hinton Robert Hinton 6'4" | CG Harvard-Westlake | 2024 State #147 Nation CA-S | 2024 | Harvard-Westlake
Hinton stayed true to himself and his game with an impressive 23-point effort that included his patented downhill drives and power finishes in the painted area. The Harvard-bound guard/wing was best on the defensive end of the floor as his physicality, relentless pressure and IQ when contesting shots and walling-up made the night difficult for La Mirada’s talented freshman Gene Roebuck.
Sebastian Rancik Sebastian Rancik 6'9" | PF JSerra | 2024 State #89 Nation CA-S | 2024 | JSerra
Rancik bounced-back from some early foul trouble to the tune of 29 second half points which led JSerra to the upset win over Roosevelt in double overtime. The 6-foot-9 senior, who signed with Colorado, is a skilled, dribble, pass and shoot forward who used those attributes to get into the lane where he created contact, got to the free throw line and connected on the freebies at a high percentage. Rancik finished with a game-high 32 points.
Tahj Ariza | 2026 | St. Bernard
Though we don’t have official tape measure confirmation, Ariza looks to have grown to 6-feet-8, which is a scary sight considering his skill-set. The sophomore is a do-it-all type of player whose fluid athleticism, ball skills, vision and scoring abilities allow him to initiate offense and operate in a point-forward capacity. Ariza is continuing to improve the consistency of his catch and shoot and off the dribble perimeter jump shot.
Trent Perry Trent Perry 6'4" | PG Harvard-Westlake | 2024 State #70 Nation CA-S | 2024 | Harvard-Westlake
Perry came out of the gates with a determination to set the tone that Harvard-Westlake would not be upset by a good La Mirada side. The 6-foot-3 USC-bound point guard is such a steady decision-maker in multiple game settings and situations but can also take over a game in the scoring column with his shooting and ability to drive and finish in the lane. Perry had 31 points in the Wolverines’ win.
