Reed is among the strongest and most physical guard prospects in SoCal’s 2029 class. The 6-foot-1 point guard has a sturdy frame that he uses to his advantage when attacking the rim and scoring in transition and when shielding off pressure or taking bumps on drives which helps him to stay on balance and flow into his consistent mid-range jumper. While a lot of younger prospects struggle initially on the defensive end, Reed’s strength, athleticism and length led to him being a viable defender from on day one. Reed ranked 11th in scoring at the 15u EYBL level with 17.8 points per game.

Reed’s combination of strength, physicality and toughness makes him a difficult player to contain at the 15u level. The 6-foot-1 SoCal-based guard has a football-like build with some basketball athleticism and fluidity mixed in which he used to his advantage by playing bully-ball when needed or draining threes when defenders sagged off. Reed is a prospect who can impact the game in a variety of ways, especially with his offensive and defensive rebounding ability.

His size created matchup problems throughout the event. He scored comfortably from all three levels while using his frame to protect the basketball and play through contact. His strength and balance allowed him to maintain his driving line, absorb contact, and finish efficiently around the rim.

With how aggressive Phil Reed is, you would never know that he’s only a rising sophomore. He has a very explosive first and second step, which typically allows him to get all the way to the hoop, or he’ll stop and knock down a pull-up jumper if that’s the better look. He is also a player who can jumpstart the fast break, whether by throwing it ahead or leaking out himself. All in all, he does a lot of the right things out there and has elite athleticism as well.

It was pretty easy to see that Reed would be an immediate impact varsity level player during his middle school years. The 6-foot-1 freshman had all the physical tools to take the reins of a program and he did just that in helping lead Palisades to a CIF Los Angeles City Section Open Division championship and a run to the CIF State Division II Regional Final. Reed was an inside-out scoring machine who also showed plenty of passing, creating and defensive feel throughout his freshman campaign.
