Expert Analysis

Costello didn’t make tons of shots from three in Rivers’ game against Austin Prep, but the 6-foot-4 sophomore really impressed with his physical tools and toughness. He was impossible to contend with in the paint and had a good number of putback finishes because of his ability to be around the ball and find the right spots on the floor to be. Even as a sophomore, his physicality was his most impressive attribute, and he was playing against a good number of older players. Any college level is on the table for Costello.

Costello looks bigger and stronger than I remember him and is really beginning to see his game come together. The 6-foot-4 wing has a really nice looking shot and good footwork/balance when coming off of screens, but he can also drive closeouts and score at the rim when the closeout comes. I think there’s still room for Costello to get more explosive athletically, and that’ll be key for him in terms of getting everything he can get out of his recruitment. He should be one of the leading scorers and very key players for Rivers School next season, and I would imagine scholarship schools are keeping tabs on his development.

Costello was a major stock riser coming out of the scholastic period, where he impressed with his offensive versatility. The Rivers School guard stands out with his advanced feel for the game and ability to play at different speeds. He’s a bigger guard that can operate on or off the ball, but shows a real instinct for scoring when he gets it in his hands. He’s a quality perimeter shooter that seemingly benefits from his jumper opening up the floor for him to score at other levels. He has good positional size, some creativity as a finisher around the rim, and the ability to create his own shot off the bounce. On top of all that, he plays with a chip on his shoulder and isn’t afraid to call for the ball when a basket is needed.

A 6’4″ scoring guard from the Rivers School, Costello is noticably bigger and stronger, and subsequently, appeared to be more comfortable and confident in this setting. His ability to shoot the basketball has never been in question and he again made shots at a high clip this weekend, but it’s his evolution as a ball-handler and decision maker that stood out. He’s a bigger guard that plays with a good feel for the game, knows how to play at different speeds, and can make plays off the bounce in isolation situations. He’ll score at all three levels and is creative once he gets into the paint, both as a scorer and facilitator. Defensively, he’s a high IQ defender that can guard any perimeter spot while showing a good understanding of angles and positioning. Only a ’28, he’s got plenty of time to continue adding to his game and is on track to eventually be a scholarship level prospect.

Costello, a member of the 15U E15 squad, is a versatile big guard out of the Rivers School in Massachusetts. After making his mark as a rotation piece this winter for Rivers, he’s continued his high level play so far this spring. He’s a versatile piece on the offensive end of the floor, capable of spending time at any of the three perimeter positions. He’s a high level shooter in catch and shoot situations, makes plays with a high IQ as an off ball cutter, and is playing with added athleticism around the rim as a finisher. He can defend three spots on the floor, makes plays in passing lanes, and shows a willingness to mix it up on the defensive glass.

Having played up on the 15U level a year ago on the UAA circuit and cut his teeth as a valuable freshman contributor in the NEPSAC, Costello looks to be taking further strides in his game that point to a breakout on the recruiting trail sooner rather than later. A big guard with the size and well-rounded skillset to operate across the positional spectrum along the perimeter, Costello brings an IQ and versatility that’s hard to find in a prospect his age. Already a consistent shotmaker and smart slasher off the bounce, he’s begun to incorporate some athleticism to his attack as well while shedding some baby fat from bis frame. With some key seniors moving on at Rivers, look for Costello to continue making strides throughout the grassroots season before stepping right into a marquee role as a sophomore.

I cannot believe Costello is a freshman. The 6-foot-4 wing is coordinated and agile for his size/age and can really shoot it from the outside – he has a beautiful-looking stroke, nice footwork, and confidence. He also uses his body well and has some solid hops when it comes to attacking the lane. He has so much time to keep figuring out what type of player he is, but right now Costello can do a little bit of everything. Any level of college basketball is on the table for someone this young and with this much potential, both skill wise and athletically.
