Will Armishaw | Prep Hoops Scout
Smith, a forward out of Kimball Union Academy, is playing some of his best and most confident basketball yet. He looks to be bigger, is playing with more physicality in the paint, and continues to show better athleticism and fluidity of movement. In this showing, he did most of his damage around the rim, finishing with efficiency by the basket. He also did well in screen and roll situations, where his large catch radius and soft hands impressed. Defensively, he’s a high level rebounder that is improving as a rim protector.

Smith had a strong summer with the New England Storm, cementing himself as one of the better fives in New England. The Kimball Union prospect is a productive two-way rebounder, does a great job of rolling out of ball screens, and has the ability to score over either shoulder in the post. He can make decisions with the ball in his hands from the top of the key, particularly when playing out of the trailer position. He knows how to play angles, has plus mobility defensively, and does a nice job of contesting around the rim without fouling. He’s turned himself into a Division I prospect, with offers from American, Maine, and Stonehill.

Smith, a versatile big out of Kimball Union Academy, continues to impress with his two-way production while playing for the New England Storm on the travel circuit. A skilled big man on the offensive end of the floor, he’s done a nice job over the last 12 months of adjusting to an elevated level of competition, showing the ability to score at multiple levels, make passes out of double teams, and function as the hub of an offensive from multiple spots in the half-court. He’s a good mover that gets up and down the floor well, uses his length to his advantage defensively, and can finish plays both above the rim and through contact in the paint.

Smith doesn’t put up the craziest stats, but he does a lot of the little things that go unnoticed for KUA. On Wednesday, he was dominant on the offensive glass, consistently fighting for second chances and kicking out to wide open shooters when the put-back wasn’t available. Defensively, the 6-foot-11 center is super disciplined and thus a good rim protector at the cup – he’s also tough and not afraid to take contact. I also appreciate his IQ and passing ability, which is relatively advanced for a junior his size. Sky’s the limit for Smith, who could definitely look a lot different by this time next year.

Smith is an intriguing longer term prospect as a result of his size and the way he thinks the game. The 6-foot-9 junior is big and long and does a really good job positioning himself defensively for blocks and contests. Offensively, I was incredibly impressed with his passing vision and hands. He caught multiple difficult passes and made quick and high IQ kick outs to shooters. He also fights hard on the glass and can finish solidly around the rim. I’ll be looking for him to develop some more post moves in the coming years to improve his D1 stock.

Smith is a five man who is just starting to scratch the surface. He is really effective on the block and shows off an array of his moves down low. He added support with his scoring. I like how Smith can quarterback the game from on the block with his passing. He did a good job at the foul line. He ran the floor and was a willing screener throughout the game. One thing I challenge Smith to work on is his strength I think if he got a tad stronger it would help him finish through contact better.

Smith followed up a terrific season at Messalonskee with a productive summer on the travel circuit with the New England Storm. A big man headed to Kimball Union Academy, Smith will look to make a name for himself this winter against a higher level of competition in the NEPSAC. He has quick hands, can move his feet well, and provides solid rim protection on the defensive end of the floor. Offensively, he’s a capable low post finisher that has gotten stronger and more athletic over the last year, allowing him to finish with more authority through contact. He’s comfortable putting the ball on the floor for multiple dribbles, can occasionally knock down a perimeter jumper, and shows a good feel as a passer out of the post. A definite scholarship prospect, Smith should have multiple coaches in the KUA gym this fall and winter to check in on his progress.

Smith, the top prospect in the MPA (Maine) this season, will reclassify and head to Kimball Union Academy in the fall. He’s had a solid spring on the travel circuit playing for the New England Storm and after a brief adjustment period, has adjusted nicely to the higher level of play. He’s a true big man that has started to show signs of floor spacing potential, but currently excels in the paint. He has a big catch radius, soft hands, and does a nice job of keeping the ball high on his catches. Defensively, he does a good job of moving his feet, rebounds in and out of his area, and is a strong rim protector. He has scholarship level physical tools and should only benefit from two years of high level competition in the NEPSAC.

Smith, our highest ranked prospect from the state of Maine, is an under-the-radar prospect who followed up a strong sophomore year by taking his game to another level this winter. He makes his impact around the rim, but is showing signs of increasing versatility on both ends of the floor. Right now, he’s a solid post presence with an array of finishing moves and good touch around the rim. Defensively, he’s mobile enough to defend in screen-and-roll action and does a nice job of cleaning up on the boards. He’s not uncomfortable with the ball and has potential as prospect who can initiate offense off a defensive rebound. He’s another prospect that will have a chance to drastically change his recruitment this summer and could play his way into a scholarship.
