‘s first season at Blair Academy saw him often times leverage his strength and intriguing physical tools to piece together impactful stretches on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor, helping Blair get to as high as #1 in the Prep National Rankings and finishing as Prep National runner ups. Awaka benefited from Blair displaying stretches throughout the course of the season of making it emphasis to get him the ball on the inside— doing his best work on the block, showcasing the ability to operate in the low post and finish through contact, proving effective as a finisher in PnR actions, while also creating second chance opportunities with his activity on the offensive boards. On the defensive end, those same physical traits translated to high level impact— where he leveraged his physicality to carve out space, battle on box outs, and consistently secure rebounds while leveraging his length to be a rim protector, altering and blocking shots with solid timing and anticipation.

Blair enters the week as the top-ranked prep team in the country and the bracket’s #1 seed, led primarily by its explosive guard play from McDonald’s All-American Deron Rippey and Rhode Island signee Jaen Chatman. But what puts the Bucs over the top is when they get Awaka playing at his best, with the top-100 junior imposing his will in the paint on both ends of the floor as a complement to the firepower in the backcourt. He’s shown added explosiveness near the rim as of late, both as a finisher and shot-blocker, and is deceptively comfortable moving his feet on the perimeter when switched onto smaller players. Awaka projects clearly toward the high-major level, but can still be a bit inconsistent in his output at times; if he’s anything close to his best in West Hartford this week, Blair is going to be a mighty tough out.

Coming in off the bench and providing arguably the key difference in the game, Awaka was a dominant force inside on both ends for his entire time on the floor. He imposed his will as a rim protector with a pair of emphatic blocks immediately upon checking in. The New York native owned the paint on the other end as well, showing increased explosiveness as a finisher in traffic and drawing contact to generate easy points at the foul line. He would convert the game-winning bucket after receiving a lob in traffic from Rippey in the closing seconds. Awaka was effective cleaning the glass and also flashed with his ability to keep the ball in front when drug out to the perimeter on D. His two-way effort gave a clear window into why he’s being pursued at the high-major level.

Awaka, a forward out of Blair Academy, made a major impact in his return to New England, impressing with his athleticism, power, and two-way motor. The Blair junior stands out as soon as he steps on the floor, with a big 6’10” frame and impressive athletic pop. He’s at his best around the basket, operating as a low post scorer, strong screener, and tough offensive rebounder. He runs the floor hard in transition, has the ability to attack off one or two bounces, and defensively, does a great job of using his strength and athleticism to win the battle on the boards.
