Another showing of the top-ranked 2029 MD/DC prospect backing his status as Costley was a key ingredient in Thrill leaving with an unscathed, 4-0 record in S1. His biggest bucket came in the final game when he cut backdoor for a layup at the buzzer to escape an early morning Sunday matchup against NJ ShoreShots. He showcased his prolific outside shooting ability with a super quick trigger in transition fading to the wings as the ball handler crossed half court or coming off pin downs in the half court with sound, compact footwork to get into his release. Costley is much more than just a sniper. He made quick reads with the ball as a distributor as this Thrill team has multiple guys with great instincts as off-ball cutters. He’s showing better processing speeds on the catch with how much gravity he demands from the defense on any catch from beyond the arc.

-Costley was consistent and steady for Springdale all season as a young point guard prospect that can make winning plays both on and off the ball. He is a talented spot up shooter, does a great job of reading the floor in side ball screens, and uses his positional size to score on post faders or step through finishes when matched up with a smaller defender on the block. Loved his defensive development over the course of the season as a guard that could switch 1-3 and showed an active set of hands that consistently created live ball turnovers that he turned into points off a bucket or assist at the other end. Costley will remain playing up an age group as he competes with Thrill’s talented 16u group this offseason.

Costley will be playing up an age group as our top-ranking freshman is coming off a high school season that included the Maryland Private School State title. The combo guard has as quick of a trigger as you’ll find and it doesn’t matter if the attempt is coming off the catch or off the bounce. The mechanics, fluidity and quickness of the release will bode well for him long-term as a college prospect and his ability to knock them down in bunches is a great foundational piece to his overall skillset. He did a nice job of operating off of off-ball screens and actions on tight curls, fade or drops to the corner where he cashed in from range. If the closeout was there in time, Costley made quick decisions of either attacking the top foot for mid-range pulls or getting it out of his hands and ensuring ball movement.

The top-ranked freshman in the state proved himself yet again with a smooth 16-point performance to help steer Springdale to the championship game. Costley was effective as a shotmaker playing both on and off the ball, knocking down shots off the catch from the perimeter and showing advanced polish to his midrange pullup arsenal. He’s a smooth ballhandler who was able to slither to his spots off the bounce and consistently create space to get his shot off. Costley’s ability to produce at this level already as a true-aged freshman along with projectable size and length give him an appealing combination of floor and ceiling as a long-term prospect.

J. Costley 15p 11r 6a 2s vs PGCA
-I wrote about his performance a little in our weekly roundup article (found here), but came away impressed with Costley’s 2-way impact as a young guard prospect with a mature approach to the game. Costley was super active on the glass, flying in to score on putbacks at the offensive end and boxing out hard to snag defensive rebounds that he could initiate the fastbreak with at the defensive end of the floor. He showed good pace on the middle drive and drop off to the cutter, hit a huge C+S corner 3 to stop a PGCA run, hit a 3 from the wing in transition a few possessions later, and drew fouls on putbacks and drives to the rim to slow the pace of the game to get free points at the line. Even though he fouled out on a tough whistle with 3 minutes left in transition to miss the two extra quarters, he still finished with a near triple-double (I missed the second half of the 1Q, stats began in the 2Q) that showed his diverse skillbase and impact for this Springdale Prep team.

-Costley holds down the #1 spot in our rankings as he has continued to show his 2-way impact as a starter for a very good Springdale Prep team that has scored some nice wins this season. Costley vacillates well between on and off-ball as a guard whose size and varied skillset allows Springdale Prep a ton of roster flexibility. His ability to plug n play as a creator, scorer, defender, and connector from the wing make him our top guy in this class.

Costley, Maryland’s top-ranked prospect in the Class of 2029, took the floor in Florence with Springdale Prep. Despite his age, Jordan has everything scouts are looking for: positional size, ability to dictate pace, comfort running the pick-and-roll, and defensive buy-in. The last attribute might be the most important right now, because the Lions play elite team defense, and if you aren’t up to that task, you won’t play crucial minutes. Costley is, and he forced a ton of turnovers with his length and ball containment. Jordan had 6 points, 4 assists, and 7 steals in a 75-30 win for Springdale Prep over Miami Southridge (FL) on Friday.

The No. 1 ranked prospect in our 2029 rankings had a good showing considering he battled foul trouble early as the refs had a quick whistle throughout. In his spurts, Costely knocked down a couple of fluid jumpers off the bounce and posed as an offense threat whenever he had it in his hands. He has good instincts and handles pressure well for a freshman while maintaining poise, balance, and pace.

-The Springdale Prep guard really stood out this summer playing up two age groups on the UAA circuit, starting on a Team Thrill team that won the championship. Costley can handle the rock to run the offense or play off the ball as a connector that can also knock down jumpers. His advanced feel and pace at this stage of his career give him a good genesis for his HS career to build from. Playing with a team full of veteran guards, wings, shooters, and play-finishing bigs should give him ample opportunity to show what he can do both on a local and national stage this season. My interview with him as a part of a Prospect Spotlight series can be found here.

One of the top young PG’s at the event. Serve as a primary ball handler or play off the ball where he is a very good catch and shoot guy, a serious threat out of catch and shoot action with three-point range. As a ball handler he reads the floor nicely and makes solid decisions. Good handle takes care of the ball. Quick, picks his spots nicely when to attack and does so with aggression. A very good passer-by on the move and he can get his shot in traffic and around the rim. Had a high game of 15 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 steal against a talented St. Frances Academy team that featured several Division 1 guards in their lineup.
