About JaMylyn
Expert Analysis
Steve Quattrocchi | Prep Hoops Scout
Johnson has shown the ability to be a point guard or play off the ball. He also knocks down shots at a high rate and is a willing defender. JaMylyn likely slides into the starting PG spot at GRC next season after playing next to Malachi Ashford this past season. Some D1 schools have already been recruiting Johnson.

Johnson was a big part of the state title team for GRC last month and is off to a hot start in the AAU season. A dynamic defender, JaMylyn is a good athlete and a consistent shooter from range. He’s got an early offer from Tennessee Wesleyan and should have more coming his way this AAU season.

JaMylyn was one of the most vocal leaders on the court in Griffin Elite UA Rise 17U’s first matchup at Midwest Mania. His presence was dominant and he caught an intense look in his eye when applying ball pressure to reiterate his mission. He has sneaky athleticism and movement patterns that allowed him to stay in front of his defender and jump passing lanes as needed. His effort resulted in several steals and deflections throughout the contest in addition to a significant level of contribution on the other end of the court.

Johnson doesn’t get many headlines but he was the heart and soul of the state championship GRC team. JaMylyn averaged 10 points and 4 rebounds per game while applying relentless pressure on the defensive end. Johnson was actually the best shooter on the GRC roster when he was hitting 39% from three over the course of the season. He already has an offer from Tennessee Wesleyan and should see more this AAU season.

A prospect who has made a big rise this season, Johnson has the quick twitch athleticism to get by the first defender off the dribble, move his feet defensively and thrive in transition. Johnson had multiple drop off assists where he drove middle down the lane and fed one of his teammates on the block for an easy layup. Johnson started the game with a sweet reverse layup off a nice offensive set, showing his ability to play within a system. A winning player, Johnson is the type of guy coaches are looking for at the wing guard position.

A new name for myself, I was immediately impressed with Johnson’s frame and quick first step off the dribble. Athletically, Johnson matches up with just about any team in the state from the wing guard position and he made some strong finishes off cuts in this game. Also knocking down a time and space 3-pointer, Johnson is a guy you can’t leave open on the perimeter. Having tough role guys who impact the game without scoring is so crucial for top high school programs.

One of the hardest playing guards in the class, Johnson has always had the physical tools and the demeanor to be a lockdown defender. As a Junior, JaMylyn has become a much more consistent offensive player. He’s averaging 10 points and 4 rebounds per game with solid, though unspectacular, shooting percentages. One of the more overlooked prospects in this class, Johnson makes his debut at 28th in the class.

Currently unranked, Johnson has really turned the corner in the last 6 months or so. A tenacious defender who played a role for GRC last season, I expect JaMylyn to have a breakout year as a Junior. At camp, he was relentless with the ball in his hands and showed that he can finish on the break and knock down open shots in the half court. Named an all star at camp, don’t be surprised if he ends up with more college offers in addition to is current offer from Tennessee Wesleyan.
