Malachi has done nothing since his freshman year other than IMPROVE. He has moved up the ranks. He is a gritty defender, who won’t let anyone by him. Malachi has knocked down 50 three-pointers on the season. The cardinals will be a tough out in the state tournament!

Ashford had an excellent game controlling the pace for George Rogers Clark, pushing the tempo when necessary but also helping George Rogers Clark chew clock at the end of quarters and late in the game when they held a double-digit advantage. Ashford also stole multiple inbounds passes, leading to one open layup and he was fouled on another. One of the top floor generals in Kentucky, Ashford is the straw that stirs the drink for George Rogers Clark.

One of the top point guards in this class for their entire high school careers, Malachi is going to be one of the better point guards signed in the spring period. Capable of scoring 30+ in any game, Ashford is a big time scoring guard. What is overlooked is that Malachi can also run a team and is a good defender who excels at getting deflections and those often lead to steals and easy layups.

In a rowdy road environment you need your seniors to step up and make plays to calm the rest of the team down and that’s what Ashford did on Thursday. Getting to the paint, Ashford wasn’t able to be contained from the point of attack all night long. Ashford’s quick hands also forced a couple turnovers which he quickly turned into transition layup opportunities. Despite his lack of size, Ashford had some crafty finishes around shot blockers throughout the night. Overall just a steady performance from a senior guard who has played in a ton of big games.

Malachi is a scoring point guard who is both quick and fast. He possesses an elite first step and excels at getting into the painted area on offense. Ashford has quick hands on the defensive end and is a solid on the ball defender who can really pressure the ball when he wants to. Over a year removed from a bad leg injury that put him out for about 6 months, Ashford holds early offers from EKU and ETSU heading into the summer.

Ashford also had a game winning 3 this weekend as he hit a deep 3 to advance to the Silver bracket championship game. In the title game Ashford was impressive with 26 points on 11/12 shooting and added several assists and steals. Malachi was electric in the open floor and got better over the course of the weekend.

Malachi is known for his shiftiness and ball handling but he’s having a big time start to his season as a shooter. Mali is making 53% of his threes while not taking a ton. Ashford is making his claim to be the hardest player in the 10th to guard with his ability to change speeds, finish over length and knock down threes consistently.
