Gretz comes to Phillips Exeter from Newburyport High School, where he was a star public school player. The 6-foot-5, strong bodied power forward can shoot the lights out and needs barely any time to get it off — he can even catch-high-keep-high in situations where bringing it down wouldn’t allow him to get one up. His strong body allows him to guard big men and compete on the boards, too, which will help a Phillips Exeter team that isn’t too big. He should be a key player for them this season.

Gretz, a high level shooter out of Phillips Exeter Academy, has stood out for playing to his strengths while helping the Middlesex Magic win a lot of games in the Hoop Group’s HGSL. The hybrid forward does a nice job of moving without the basketball, is a tough cover as a pop guy out of ball screens, and has a compact release on his jumper. He can show and go on the perimeter, finishes over size in the paint, and continues to show signs of increased athleticism. Defensively, he has a high compete level and is capable of guarding either forward spot.

It’s incredibly rare to see a high school player with as quick a shot release as Gretz. The 6-foot-5 senior (reclassifying to 2026 next year) will catch the ball above his shoulders and go straight into his shot — a classic catch high, keep high — but he’ll actually knock it down with consistency. He also seems to have bulked up physically since the last time I saw him. If he can get quicker laterally and improve his handle, he could get some really high D3 looks, and maybe even some D2 looks. Right now, though, I would slot Gretz in as a D3 player who should get a lot better at Phillips Exeter next season.
