Dublin Coffman has a nice mix of youth and experience and Schmidt falls into the latter category as he’s been a varsity staple for a few years now. What I loved about Schmidt’s game on Friday is he played so hard that he had to ask his coach for breathers after playing for 8-10 minutes in a row. While Schmidt is in excellent shape, he was playing so hard that he needed to give himself a quick breather to get back into the game. I rarely see that in the winter let alone a summer basketball game and that’s the type of intensity that Schmidt plays with. Offensively, Schmidt hit multiple 3-pointers and used the bank to hit a couple mid-range and floater shots. I think Schmidt should be near the top of small college recruiting boards across Ohio.

Filling in for the Ohio Buckets Black this weekend, Schmidt showed his versatility as a wing guard who can adjust to different teammates and fit different systems. His positional size, shooting ability and basketball IQ all translated and I loved his off ball movement to get easy looks. All of these qualities make Schmidt a high priority small college target for regional programs.

Playing without their senior leader at point guard, I got to see some new names for Dublin Coffman do some more things on the ball and take more shots. It was nice to see Schmidt step up to the challenge with a handful of impressive passes to set his teammates up. Transition was where Schmidt was threading the needle for numerous assists throughout the game. Also knocking down a couple 3-pointers, Schmidt can make the defense pay for leaving him open from downtown. It’ll be interesting to see where Dublin Coffman takes a leap this offseason because Saturday was a glimpse at the future of the program.
